Radford Cruises Past Roanoke, 99-67
RADFORD, Va. - Art Parakhouski scored 25 points and Laz Trifunovic added 22 to lead four Radford players in double figures, as the Highlanders rolled past Roanoke College 99-67 on Sunday afternoon at the Dedmon Center. Radford improved to 5-3 while the Maroons dropped to 4-3 on the season.
Radford, which met Roanoke in the first meeting since 1978, shot 50.7 percent for the game (38-of-75), highlighted by a 58.8 percent (20 of 34) performance in the first half. Roanoke fared well shooting from the floor (40.7%) and from beyond the arc, hitting 10-of-28 (35.7%), but was only 56.3% from the free-throw line.
Matt Crizer (Covington, VA, Alleghany)three-pointer gave the Maroons its only lead, 3-2 to open the game, as Radford went on a 13-0 run to take a 15-3 lead with 15:40 left in the half.
Crizer connected on another three to spark an 11-4 run as Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem)scored the final five points during that span to make it, 19-14 with 12:18 to play before halftime.
But another 13-0 run by Radford saw its lead expand to 18 points, 32-14 with 6:24 remaining in the half. Trifunovic (15 points) and Parakhouski (14) combined for 30 of Radford's 51 first half points, as the Highlanders scored 24 in the paint on the way to a 51-27 lead at halftime. Radford used a 28-7 run over 11:25 in the opening period, fueled by nine points from Trifunovic and eight from Parahouski, to open up a 47-21 lead at the 1:51 mark on the Maroons.
Radford opened up its largest lead of the game at 35 points on Cole Wilder's three-pointer with 5:06 remaining to make it 91-56.
Parakhouski had the 14th 20-point game of his career and his seventh this season, hitting 11 of 13 shots. His 18 rebounds gave him a double-double in each of Radford's games this season.
Trifunovic posted his best outing with the Highlanders after transferring from Binghamton, shooting 10-of-14 and grabbing 11 rebounds. Since playing in his first Radford game Dec. 3 at Winthrop, Trifunovic has netted double figures in three of four games. Joey Lynch-Flohr contributed 18 points and Amir Johnson scored a season-high 11 for the Highlanders.
Felix and Crizer scored 11 points each for Roanoke, pacing five players in double figures. Crizer added a team-best five rebounds and three steals while connecting on three treys on the afternoon. Michael McGeough (Danville, VA, George Washington), Corey Poindexter (Pulaski, VA, Pulaski County/Hargrave)and Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)each poured in 10 helpers. Papa Fall (Senegal, South Kent School (CT))came off the bench to pull down a team-high five rebounds in 21 minutes of action.
The men will have nearly two weeks off before heading to Cleveland, OH to take both Ithaca and tournament-host Case Western Reserve in the Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament Dec. 29-30. Roanoke defeated Ithaca, 68-64 during in their only meeting during the 2005-06 season. Game time vs. the Bombers is scheduled for 6 p.m.
