#18 Eastern Mennonite Wins Third-Straight against Roanoke
SALEM, Va. --- Eastern Mennonite scored over 100 points for the fourth time this season in a 116-89 victory over Roanoke in ODAC action Saturday afternoon at the Bast Center. The Maroons dropped to 8-10 overall, 4-6 in the ODAC. The Runnin' Royals, ranked #18 in the country, improved to 14-4, 5-4 in conference play.
EMU, which is the pre-season favorite to win the ODAC this season, got 30 points from ODAC's second-leading scorer, Todd Phillips. He also contributed eight rebounds and four assists.
The Royals out-rebounded the Maroons, 43-33 and shot 52-percent (34-of-66) on the afternoon, including 13-of-28 from beyond the arc (46%).
Squaring off against its second top-25 team in three days, Roanoke had a strong first-half against EMU in a high-scoring affair. By the end of the first 20 minutes of play, the Royals led, 57-50. The 50 first-half points for Maroons were the highest since their 62-point outburst against Patrick Henry (11/22).
The Maroons hung within 10 points for the first six-minutes in the second half. Matt Crizer (Covington, VA, Alleghany), who scored a career-best 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor, hit two free-throws to make it, 74-66 with 14:09 remaining.
EMU scored 10 unanswered points over the next three minutes to extend its lead to 18, 84-66, with 11-minutes remaining. Roanoke never threatened in the final 10-minutes of play.
Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem) scored 23 points, including 4-of-4 from the line and 3-of-5 from downtown with three assists. Felix, who has 1,045 career points, needs three points to pass Steve Baker '64 for 28th on the all-time scoring list.
Corey Poindexter (Pulaski, VA, Pulaski County/Hargrave) notched a season-best 14 points, hitting 3-of-5 from three-point range. He has increased his scoring mark over the last three outings. Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley) had his second career double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Singleton has scored in double-figures for the fourth-straight game, the eighth time in the last 10 games.
Eli Crawford poured in 20 points, hitting 10-of-11 from the free-throw line with seven rebounds. Marlon Organ scored 14 points in 14 minutes of action, sinking 2-of-3 treys.
The men return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 2 as they host Guilford in ODAC action. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
