Singleton has Career Day in Loss to Christopher Newport
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- Logan Singleton posted career-highs of 32 points and 16 rebounds in a 84-78 loss to Christopher Newport in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at the Freeman Center. The Maroons slip to 8-13 while the Captains propel to 14-7.
Singleton put together arguably the best individual performance of the season, shooting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, 5-of-6 from the line and hit 12-of-18 from the floor. His 16 rebounds are a season-high for any Roanoke player along with four blocked shots.
CNU avenged a loss suffered at the Bast Center to Roanoke last season. The win broke a two-game series skid and improved to 4-3 against the Maroons. It was the Maroons' second game in consecutive days in the Tidewater area.
Both teams battled in the first half, with four ties and eight lead changes. Down 7-2 early, Roanoke scored three unanswered baskets to take their first lead of the contest. Tied 30-30 with just under five minutes remaining, CNU went on a 10-2 run to take an eight-point lead. They went into the locker room with a 46-39 lead.
The Captains led by as many as 10 in the second half, as Herrmann knocked down a three-pointer on the first possession with 19:32 left. Roanoke slowly chipped away at the Captains lead, completing the comeback just over ten minutes into the half.
Clay Lacy knocked down a long three from the corner to tie the game at 61 with 9:28 remaining. A three-pointer by Matt Crizer tied the game for the final time, 64-all with just over seven-minutes to go. The Maroons would get no closer than two points the remainder of the contest as the Captains hit 6-of-8 down the final stretch.
Roanoke had a solid performance as a team, going head-to-head with CNU through the entire game. The Maroons shot 76.5% from the line and committed only 12 turnovers. They were edged by the Captains, 51-48 in the rebounding column, 34-32 in points in the paint and 13-11 in second chance scoring.
Melvin Felix finished with 16 points, improving his career point total to 1,080, which passed Brad Dunleavy '01 for 26th all-time.
Jack Hamilton had seven points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots while Crizer added eight points off the bench. Kwasi Amponsah contributed four points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Conley Taylor led CNU with 32 points, hitting 8-of-8 from the line, in addition to six assists. Tre Benefield scored 22 points and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Brian Herrmann notched a double-double with a 19-point, 14-rebound performance.
The men will host Emory & Henry on Wednesday, Feb. 9 in ODAC action. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bast Center.
