Randolph-Macon uses Big Second Half to Pull Away from Maroons
SALEM, Va--- Roanoke fell to #11 Randolph-Macon, 85-53 Saturday afternoon at the Bast Center. The Maroons fell to 9-14, 5-9 in ODAC play, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 20-4, 14-3 in the conference.
Randolph-Macon, one of Roanoke's oldest opponents, has now won six-straight match ups dating back to 2007. The Yellow Jackets hold a slim 76-69 edge in the all-time series.
Roanoke out-rebound Randolph-Macon, 36-34. Randolph-Macon shot 50.8% for the afternoon, including 56.5% from three-point range for the hottest shooting team in the ODAC. Meanwhile, the Maroons hit 69.1% of their free-throws (9-of-13) and 39.6% overall (21-of-53).
Roanoke battled visiting R-MC throughout the first half, trailing just 20-18 midway through the first period. Melvin Felix led the charge for the Maroons early, scoring nine points in the first 10-minutes of play. The Yellow Jackets continued to pull away as they led by as many seven, 35-28 with a minute to play, before a Corey Poindexter jumper brought RC within five entering the locker room.
Logan Singleton pulled Roanoke within four, 40-36 on a driving layup, just two minutes into the second half. But the rest of the game posed to be a much different story for the Maroons, as they shot just 10-29 (34.5%) from the field and did not connect on a shot from beyond the arc.
Randolph-Macon, however, went on a 38-10 run over the next 12-minutes of play to pull away for good and clinch its fourth-straight 20-win season.
The Yellow Jackets caught fire in the second half, connecting on 19-of-36 (52.8%) of their shots from the field, 8-of-10 (80%) from downtown. R-MC outscored the Maroons, 50-23 in the final 20-minutes.
Kwasi Amponsah and Felix led Roanoke with 13 points each. Felix moved up two spots into 25th on the all-time scoring list with 1,106 career points. Singleton added eight points, nine boards and two blocked shots.
Danny Jones and Eric Pugh both had 18 points to lead four Yellow Jackets in double-figures. Adam Desgain tossed in 12 points followed by Calvin Croskey with 11.
The men will travel to Lynchburg to take on Randolph in ODAC action Wednesday, Feb. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
