Maroons Cruise Past Swarthmore in final day of Morris Cregger Classic, 74-48
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke cruised past Swarthmore, 74-48 in the final day of the Morris Cregger New Year's Classic Tuesday afternoon at the Bast Center. The Maroons improved to 4-7 while the Garnet slipped to 1-9 on the season.

The Maroons, who won by their largest margin since defeating Patrick Henry, 107-65 (Nov. 22, 2010), jumped out to a commanding 39-19 halftime lead and never trailed as they held the Garnet to a mere 19.4 percent (7-36) shooting.

It's only the second time the two teams have met, with the only meeting nearly 30 years to the day (Jan. 4, 1982) as the Maroons won, 74-63 in Alumni Gym. Back then they were led by junior All-American Gerald Holmes as Roanoke went 16-0 at home in the final season in the old gym. They would go on to finish 27-4 and win their second-straight ODAC Championship.

Clay Lacy did a solid job defending their leading scorer, Will Gates, who had 27 points and seven three-pointers in yesterday's game vs. Shenandoah. He held the shooter to just 4-of-16 on the day for only 10 points.

Roanoke, which have won three of the last five games, shot 45.3% on the afternoon, including 46.2% (6-13) from three-point range. The Maroons have made 28 three-pointers over the last five games. The defense held their opponents to 24.3% (17-70) shooting including 15.8% (3-19) from downtown.

The men out-rebounded the Garnet, 48-38 as they won their first game in 2012. The Maroons are now 3-1 when leading at the half this season.

Logan Singleton was named to the all-tournament team after a double-double performance of 17 points and 11 rebounds. He also blocked two shots to move into sixth on the career blocked shots list at Roanoke with 81.

Kwasi Amponsah scored in double-figures for the 10th-straight game with 15 counters and tied a career-high 8-of-10 shooting from the line. He also pulled down five rebounds and dished out two assists. Jack Hamilton had a solid game with six points, nine boards and three assists.

Zach Barrett tied his career-high with eight points and made a new career-best with two three-pointers on the afternoon. Colby Shorter totaled a career-best five points and hit his first career three-pointer in the win. Alexander Weant pulled down a season-high five rebounds.

Jordan Federer led Swarthmore with 11 points and two assists, shooting 5-of-7 from the line. Michael Giannangeli finished with 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals while connecting on two three-pointers. Matt Sharma added four points, four boards and three blocked shots, while Yates pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.

The men return to ODAC action Saturday, Jan. 7 as they host Hampden-Sydney (9-2). Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Bast Center.
