Maroons Drop ODAC Contest to Washington and Lee, 79-57
SALEM - The Roanoke Men's Basketball team fell to the Generals of Washington & Lee on Wednesday night, 79-57. The Maroons fall to 4-9, 0-4 in ODAC play while the Generals rise to 9-5, and are 3-3 in the ODAC.

The Generals jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Kwasi Amponsah made the first field goal for the Maroons after a pair of Logan Singleton free throws to pull the game to 5-4 at the 17:30 mark. Singleton and Adam Kessler each hit two free throws to give Roanoke an 8-4 lead.

Both teams exchanged the lead over the course of the next six minutes with W&L leading 13-12 at the 10:00 mark.

With four minutes to go in the first half, the Generals started an 11-0 run that ran inside the last minute to take a 33-16 advantage. However Singleton and Jordan Thacker each hit a jumper in the final moments of the half to pull the Maroons within 14, 34-20.

Amponsah and Singleton led Roanoke at the half, each with five points. Clay Lacy pulled down five rebounds before the end of the first stanza.

The Maroons' offense opened in the second half as hit had in the first, at the free throw line. Kessler knocked down a free throw to get Roanoke's offense moving. W&L responded with its leading scorer, J.D. Ey, knocking down a jumper just inside the first minute. Ey's basket started a 7-2 run extended the General's lead to 18, 41-23.

The Maroons tried to chip away at the lead, with baskets from Ethan Humphries and Daniel Eacho, but W&L buried a pair of threes to stop the momentum.

With 12:29 to go, Amponsah started a 6-2 run that pulled the Maroons within 19, 52-31.

Starting with 9:00 to go in the half, Amponsah and Singleton wolud trade baskets with splashes of Jack Hamilton jumpers in between. However, the Generals' offense remained strong, keeping their 20 point lead through that stretch. Logan Singleton drained a three at the 4:00 minute mark to keep the Maroons within 19, 69-50.

However, Roanoke was unable to close the gap, with Washington and Lee extending its lead to at most 24, ending the game ahead of the Maroons, 79-55.

The ODAC's top scoring tandem of Amponsah and Singleton led the Maroons with 13 points a piece, with Singleton pulling down five rebounds and Amponsah with three. Clay Lacy led the team with seven rebounds, and Julian Ramirez added five rebounds and four steals.

Jeremy Adkins led the Generals with 11 points, while Larry Whitaker and J.D. Ey added 10 each. Kelton Buchanan topped W&L with nine rebounds.

The Maroons will return to action on Saturday, January 14 as they travel to Virginia Beach, Va. to face the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
