Roanoke fell to #2 Virginia Wesleyan on the Road
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Roanoke fell to #2 Virginia Wesleyan, 75-59 in ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) Men's Basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Batten Center. The Maroons record falls to 4-10 overall, 0-5 in the ODAC, while the Marlins improved to 13-1, 6-0 in conference play.

Virginia Wesleyan, winners of 13-straight since dropping its season-opener to Salisbury, won its seventh-straight over Roanoke since 2007. The Marlins, who never trailed in the contest, had 16 steals and scored 24 points off 24 Maroon turnovers.

Roanoke, however, did not go quietly, as the defense held VWC to 36.1% shooting (22-61) and out-rebounded the Marlins, 44-33. The Maroons shot 41.5% (22-53) for the game and outscored the opposition, 17-10 in bench scoring.

The Marlins played like the #2 team in the country over the first 10-minutes of play as they raced out to a 20-8 lead. The Maroons answered back with a 16-8 run over the next seven minutes to make it a four-point game, 28-24 with 2:13 remaining.

Coming out the locker room up, 33-26 to begin the second half, Roanoke put up a fight, trading baskets with Virginia Wesleyan the first six minutes of the second stanza.

The Marlins increased their lead to 12 after scoring six unanswered points to make it 46-34 with 12-minutes left. From that point on, VWC kept Roanoke at bay, increasing its lead to as high as 14 and remained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.

Roanoke, which is still looking for its first ODAC win of the season, was led by Kwasi Amponsah with 18 points, five rebounds and three steals. He also hit 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Logan Singleton added 11 points and eight rebounds while Adam Kessler contributed seven counters and a team-best nine rebounds. Stefan Vulevic chipped in eight points.

Chris Astorga led the Marlins with 22 points, hitting 4-of-7 from three-point range and two blocked shots. Donald Vaughn scored 15 points, pulled down nine boards and had a game-high six steals. Chris Teasley totaled 12 points while DJ Woodmore hit 10-of-10 from the line for 14 points.

The men will look to bounce back on Monday, Jan. 16 as they host Emory & Henry in conference action. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bast Center.
