Men's Basketball Falls in Nail-Biter to Bridgewater, 71-67 on Saturday
SALEM - The Roanoke Men's Basketball team fell to Bridgewater College, 71-67 on Saturday in ODAC action. The Maroons fall to 5-12, 1-7 in the ODAC, while the Eagles rise to 5-12, 2-6 in ODAC play.

With this loss, it snaps a three game win streak against Bridgewater for the Maroons. Roanoke still leads the all-time series 104-32.

Roanoke outshot Bridgewater 45% to 39% from the field, but the Eagles outscored the Maroons from behind the charity stripe, 15-6. Bridgewater also forced 21 Roanoke turnovers to their 17.

The Maroons coming off a victory over Randolph College, got hot early as Daniel Eacho put the first two points on the board, followed by a deep three by Logan Singleton.

Roanoke led by as many as six in the opening moments of the first half, but with 11:45, the Eagles tied the game up at 12-12. However, the ODAC's fourth-leading scorer, Singleton scored six straight in regaining the 18-14 lead. Singleton's last basket of the three started an 8-2 run for Roanoke.

Tavis Stapleton and Cody Griffith each hit late threes in the half to take the lead from Roanoke at the end of the half, 29-27.

At the half, both teams shot 34.4% (11-32) from the field. The Eagles forced more turnovers (11-6) while the Maroons took the advantage on the boards, 27-17. Singleton led the Maroons with nine first-half points and six rebounds.

Kwasi Amponsah, opened the scoring in the second half, promptly reclaiming the lead for Roanoke, 30-29. Aaron Adams and Ronnie Thomas responded with a pair of baskets and a trey, respectively, to go back ahead in just the first few minutes.

Four lead changes occurred in the first six minutes of the half, ending with Bridgewater going ahead 42-38 after a pair of deep three-pointers from Thomas and Benaiah Wise at the 13:50 mark. Thomas is Bridgewater's top three-point shooter hitting 41.2% from behind the arc.

With 10:00 to go in the contest, the Maroons trailed by six 48-42, until Roanoke's leading scorer, Amponsah drained a three-pointer to cut the lead to three.

At the 5:42 mark, the ODAC's top scoring tandem helped cut the Eagle's lead to one, as Amponsah fed Singleton down low for two, making the score 55-54. Bridgewater's leading scorer, Cody Griffith (11.9 ppg) responded on the next possession with a three-point basket to push the difference to four.

With 2:45 remaining, the Maroons trailed by seven, until Amponsah knocked down a trey, then dunked one home off of an Adam Kessler steal, cutting the deficit to two 63-61.

Up to the final minute of the contest, the Eagles went on a 5-1 run which a Kessler jumper stopped with 49.9 seconds to go, making the score 68-64.
After Matthew Hunter sank one of two free throws, Amponsah drained a three to cut the lead to two 69-67, with :22 to play. In the last :10 Ed Reddick knocked down two free throws to extend the lead to four, 71-67. That score would hold for the final moments of the game, as the Maroons fall in ODAC action.

Amponsah led all players with a game-high 27 points. He scored 18 second-half points and marked his sixth game scoring 20 points or more this season. Singleton followed in scoring with 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Griffith was the top scorer for the Eagles with 15 points. Reddick led all players with 10 rebounds in the effort.

The men's basketball team will return to action on Wednesday, January 25th as they play host to Randolph-Macon in the C. Homer Bast Gymnasium. The ODAC contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.
