Maroons Fall in Exhibition Matchup Against Furman, 75-49

GREENVILLE, SC - The Roanoke Men's Basketball team jumped out to an early lead, but couldn't hold off Furman as they fell, 75-49 in exhibition play. This game, however, was the opening game of regular season action for the Paladins and they start their season 1-0.

Furman outscored Roanoke in the paint 32-18 and in points off turnovers 21-10. The Paladins also outrebounded the Maroons 52-32.

The Maroons jumped out to an early lead as Logan Singleton dropped a pair of baskets in the first couple of minutes to take a 4-0 lead. Four points would be the largest lead of the game for Roanoke, as that mark would be met one more time as Jack Hamilton hit a jumper four minutes in the game to make the score 6-2. The Paladins proceded to go on a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to claim the lead that they would hold for the rest of the contest.

After a 7-0 run by Furman, Roanoke closed the gap with an 8-0 spurt of its own. Amponsah's two made free throws made it 23-20 with five minutes remaining. The Paladins responded by connecting on four three-pointers to jump out to the biggest lead of the half, 34-20 at the 2:58 mark.

Singleton scored on the next two possessions to end the run. Amponsah hit a 12-footer just outside the paint to end the first half scoring as Furman held a 37-27 halftime edge.

Furman would continue their run during the second half, not allowing the Maroons to score more than five consecutive points during the period. The Paladins finished the game on a 15-6 run to win the contest 75-49

Kwasi Amponsah led the Maroons with 15 points. From the free-throw line, Roanoke outshot Furman 82 percent to 72 percent courtesy of Amponsah's 9-10 mark from the stripe. Logan Singleton, second leading scorer in 2010-11, finished the game with 11 points and two rebounds.

Ethan Humphries and Adam Kessler led the Maroons with four rebounds each, while Jack Hamilton posted a team high three assists.

The Maroons begin the regular season on Nov. 19 as they host the 2011 Dick Leftwitch V-Foundation Classic. Their season-opener will be against #13 ranked Emory on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2:00 p.m.
