Ferrum Escapes with 72-66 win at Roanoke

SALEM --- Roanoke battled to within a bucket of potentially sending the game into overtime, but Ferrum escaped with a 72-66 win at the Bast Center Sunday in the V-Foundation Classic.

Down 68-66 with just over 20-seconds remaining, junior guard Kwasi Amponsah penetrated through the lane and put up a contested layup. His shot rimmed out as Lamont King pulled down the rebound as the Panthers knocked down all four free-throw attempts down the stretch to secure their first win of the season.

Ferrum (1-2), which won their third-straight against Roanoke, shot 46.4% from the floor (26-56), 7-of-13 from beyond the arc (53.8%) and 13-of-17 (76.5%) from the free-throw line. The Panthers out-rebounded the Maroons, 36-32 and had 14 steals in the win.

Roanoke (0-2), who own a 14-5 series lead against Ferrum, shot 25-of-55 for the game, but was 54.5% in the second half, including 3-for-6 from three-point range.

Amponsah, who was named to the V-Foundation All-Tournament Team, led all scorers with 20 points. It was his third 20-point performance of his career. He was 6-of-13 from the floor in addition to 6-of-7 from the line and pulled down five rebounds.

With five ties and four lead changes, the first half remained tight in the first 20-minutes of play. Amponsah's layup at the 7:43 mark gave the Maroons its first lead of the game, 22-21. Andrew Daniels conventional three-point play gave Roanoke its largest lead of the half, 27-24 with 6:25 remaining.

Over the next five minutes, Ferrum went on a 16-4 run to regain the lead and extend it to nine with just over a minute left in the half. Amponsah capped the final minute scoring six of the final seven points, including a three-pointer from the top of the key to cut the Panthers halftime lead to within two, 40-38.

The Panthers raced out to a 10-point lead, scoring the first eight points of the second half to take a 48-38 advantage. The Maroons would get within five points on seven different occasions over the ensuing 15 minutes.

The Maroons clawed their way back slowly over the final four minutes of regulation and cut it to two after a made jumper from the corner by Jack Hamilton to make it 68-66 with 1:15 to go.

Logan Singleton tallied 13 points and had a team-best eight boards, followed by Hamilton who tossed in 12 counters and led the Maroons with three assists. It was his second-straight game scoring in double-figures against Ferrum. Ethan Humphries totaled five points, four rebounds and two steals.

Daryl Hart led Ferrum with 17 points, hitting 6-of-10 from the field and three steals. Lamont King had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 8-of-10 from the line. Nick English and Javonte Rankin totaled 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The men return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 22 as they travel to Bluefield St. for their first road game of the season. The non-divisional match-up will be the first meeting against the NCAA Div. II program. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
