In 149th meeting, Maroons topped by Yellow Jackets, 75-62 on Saturday
ASHLAND - In a contest that has been 100 years in the making, the Roanoke College men's basketball team fell in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action to Randolph Macon, 75-62 on Saturday. The Maroons now have a record of 8-11, 1-9 in ODAC play, while the Yellow Jackets are 11-8, 6-4 in the ODAC.

For both teams, the 2012-13 serves as the 100th season of basketball, and before today, the all-time series stood at 74-74. Roanoke and Randolph played each other in both team's first games of their first season back in 1911. Roanoke won that contest 27-13 on January 8, 1911.

Daniel Eacho led the Maroons in scoring and rebounds, putting together his third consecutive and fifth overall double-double of the season. He finished with 23 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Kwasi Amponsah and Julian Ramirez finished the game with 10 points each. Ramirez and Cameron Smith were the second leading rebounders, pulling down five rebounds each.

Amponsah and Eacho scored four points each in the first minute, helping the Maroons jump out to an 8-4 lead at the 15:42 mark in the first half. The Yellow Jackets got hot shortly after that, putting together an 11-0 run to take a 15-8 lead.

Stefan Vulevic helped pull the Maroons back within three, 19-16, knocking down two treys. Clay Lacy hit a three-pointer of his own to get the Maroons back within two, but the Maroons just couldn't retake the lead. Randolph-Macon finished the final minutes of the half on an 8-2 run, entering the locker room ahead 37-25.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Eacho had scored six of Roanoke's seven points, as the Maroons trailed 47-32. With 7:29 on the clock, Eacho completed an old-fashioned three point play to pull Roanoke within 10, 56-46. He then made a layup to get within eight.

However Randolph-Macon's Lamar Giggetts and Connor Sullivan made free throws and layups to extend the Yellow Jacket lead back to 15.
Randolph was able to hold that 15-point margin until the final minute of the game when Tyler Akers made five consecutive points, pulling with in 12, 74-62. Randolph-Macon hit one final shot at the end of the game to win the 149th meeting of the two teams, 75-62 on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets' Andre Simmons finished the contest with a team-high 23 points and 13 rebounds. He was followed by Connor Sullivan with 15 points and Lamar Giggetts with 14.

Randolph-Macon outshot Roanoke 45.5 to 33.3 percent from the field, while Roanoke held the advantage from behind the arc, 41.2 to 25.0 percent. The Yellow Jackets led in rebounds 47-40.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, January 30th as they play host to Guilford College. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM tip-off.
