Roanoke College Announces Basketball All-Decade Teams (Men's and Women's 1980s)
SALEM - In conjunction with its 100 Years of Basketball Celebration, the Roanoke College athletic department has announced the Basketball All-Decade teams on Thursday, March 14th. These All-Decade squads range from the Pre-Modern Era through the 2012-13 season, and were voted on by both a panel of judges and an online poll.

One of the storied programs in the history of men's collegiate basketball, Roanoke ranks as the 20th program to win 1,300 games and ranks as one of the all-time winningest program in NCAA Division III history. The program's 21 post-season appearances and 22 conference titles are unprecedented. Roanoke had two national semi-finalist finishes in 1972 and 1983 and an NIT Final Four appearance in 1939. The Maroons claimed the NCAA College Division national title in 1972. The program boasts 14 consensus All-Americans, nearly 100 all-conference selections and 34 1,000-point scorers.

The 100 Years of Roanoke College Basketball reception will highlight a number of planned events during Alumni Weekend (April 12-13). The weekend will open on Friday, with the Roanoke College Alumni Golf Tournament. Taking place at the Roanoke Country club, the golf outing will begin at 11:00 AM with lunch, followed by a shotgun start at Noon. The 100 Years of Basketball Celebration will take place in the Wortman Ballroom on Friday evening from 8:00-10:00 PM. During the event, the recipients of the All-Decade and All-Century team awards will be recognized. On Saturday morning, the women's and men's basketball teams will hold their alumni games in the Bast Center at 10:30 and 11:30, respectively. Also on tap for the weekend, the Maroon Club will host a reception from 2:00-4:00 PM at Sutton Terrace, for all Maroon Club members to attend. Women's All-Decade Team

Alice Apperson ‘89 - A member of the women's basketball team from 1985-1989, Apperson was a two-time ODAC Player of the Year for the Maroons, the first player ever to accomplish that feat. A two-year team captain, she led Roanoke to three ODAC Championships. Apperson finished her career as the school's second all-time leading scorer (1,453 points) and third in career rebounds with 749. An All-South Region All-Star following her junior season, Apperson was named All-American and Roanoke College's Female Athlete of the Year as a senior. She holds the school's single-season records for rebounds (235) and field goals made (236).

Vickie Zimmerman ‘85 - Zimmerman distinguished herself as one of Roanoke's top female student-athletes. In 1986, Zimmerman led her team in both scoring and rebounding, earning All-ODAC and All-ODAC Tournament honors. That same year, she was selected to the Kodak All-South team and Fast Break Magazine's first-team All-America College Division squad. She earned All-ODAC status three times in her career and was the 1985 ODAC Player of the Year. She helped lead the Maroons to the 1983 and '84 ODAC Championships, the first in school history. She is currently fifth all-time in scoring (1,383), second in rebounding (842), blocked shots (102) and fourth in field goals made (582). She scored 37 points in the 1985 ODAC Championship game vs. Eastern Mennonite.

Ann Harwood ‘83 - A small college third-team All-American in 1982-83, Harwood earned numerous honors in her four year career at Roanoke. She was Virginia State All-Conference (1979-80), Virginia Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (VAIAW) All-State and All-Tournament team (1981-82) and First-team All-Region (1981-82). As a senior, Harwood was first-team All-ODAC, All-State and All-Region in addition to winning the school's first-ever ODAC Championship. Harwood is the fourth all-time leading scorer in Roanoke women's basketball with 1,441 points in four seasons with the Maroons.

Mary Beth Harvey '84 - Harvey, a First-Team All-ODAC selection in 1983-84, led the Maroons in scoring as a senior team captain (16.7 ppg). She was a Kodak All-American selection following the 1983-84 season in addition to an All-South Region honor as a senior. Harvey helped lead Roanoke to its first two ODAC Crowns in 1983 & '84, leading the Maroons in rebounding both years. She finished her career with 1,155 points, 712 rebounds and a .522 field goal percentage. Set the single-season record in field goal percentage (60.8%).

Emilee Voelker '83 - Voelker was a three-year team captain at guard for the Maroons. She led the squad in assists for two seasons and is ranked seventh all-time at Roanoke (261). Helped the Maroons as a junior to a to a 21-win season and the Virginia Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) title in 1981. Voelker set the single-season assists record for nearly 20 years (139). Set the single-game steals record with seven vs. Richmond in 1982.

Tina Phillips '83 - Phillips was a three-year starter for the Lady Maroons at the point guard position. She led the Maroons in scoring as a junior (14.4 ppg) and in assists and steals her final two years. She was a second-team All-ODAC selection her senior year, leading the women to their first ODAC Championship in 1983. Helped the Maroons as a sophomore to a to a 21-win season and the Virginia Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) title in 1981. Set the single-season record in steals with 70 in 1982-83.

Sara McCloskey '87 - McCloskey was a four-year letterman for Susan Dunagan. A First-Team All-ODAC selection as a senior captain, McCloskey was named to the 1986 All-ODAC Tournament team en route to the ODAC Championship. She was second in scoring (10.4 ppg) and assists (53) as a senior in addition to one of the nation's best 90% free-throw percentage.

Leslie Secrist '85 - Finishing her career as the career assists leader (352), Secrist currently sits third all-time on that list. She led the Maroons in steals in her final two seasons as she was part of the first four-year class to play for Susan Dunagan. A two-time Second-Team All-ODAC selection, Secrist was named team captain as a senior. She was part of back-to-back ODAC Championship teams in 1983 and 1984. She set school-records in single-game assists with 10 on three occasions.

Tracy Driscoll '89 - Driscoll was a two-time All-ODAC selection for Susan Dunagan's Maroons women's basketball program from 1985-89. She led team in blocked shots as a junior (42) and named team captain as a senior. As a senior vs. Greensboro, Driscoll tied a school-record with 10 assists.

Charimane Martin '87 - Martin played only two seasons at Roanoke, but was an impact player. As a sophomore, she led Maroons in scoring (14.7 ppg) and blocked shots en route to earning Second-Team All-ODAC honors. She was the fourth-leading scorer as a freshman while leading the team in rebounding (6.3 rpg).

Men's All-Decade Team

James Pennix '88 - Pennix finished his career with 1,282 points, which is currently 17th all-time. He ranks eighth in rebounding (719), fifth in steals (171) and seventh in assists (254). He is one of two Maroons to ever post 1,000 points, and in the top-10 in rebounds, steals and assists. He was a first-team All-ODAC selection as a sophomore (1986) and second-team as a senior (1988). He lead the Maroons to a four-year record of 72-43; 33-23 in the ODAC, with three ODAC Tournament Championships and three NCAA Appearances.

Billy McCormick '88 - McCormick, who played his final two seasons at Roanoke after transferring from Newberry (SC), led team in free-throw shooting last two seasons. He led the Maroons to back-to-back ODAC Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. McCormick was named to the conference's all-freshman team and Freshman Athlete of the Year at Newberry, where he averaged 12 points a game as a sophomore before coming back to the Roanoke Valley. A New River Valley Player of the Year at Radford High School, he averaged 10 points as a junior and 14 ppg his senior year. In his final collegiate game vs. Bridgewater in the ODAC semifinals, he scored a school ODAC Tournament record 33 points in the four-overtime thriller that ended the seven-straight ODAC Championship run by the Maroons.

Donnie Morris '83 - Morris started at point guard his last two seasons, posting an impressive 58-6 record over that span. He finished his career with 202 assists (ranked second all-time upon graduation) and 140 steals, which was a school-record upon graduation in 1983. He led the team in assists both years and averaged 9.4 points per game at the point guard position in 1982-83.

Bruce Hembrick '81 - Hembrick scored 1,312 career points at RC, which was at the time the 10th highest scoring total in program history. He was a member of the “Four Horsemen” who led the Maroons into NCAA Div. III and played in both Div. II and III National Tournaments. He scored in double figures in each of his four seasons.

Mike Styles '81 - Styles, who was a highly recruited quarterback in high school, set the career assists record (428) which stood for 17 years. He was a member of the “Four Horsemen” who led the Maroons into NCAA Div. III and played in both Div. II and III National Tournaments. The four-year starter at point guard led the Maroons to a 74-9 record in his final three years, which included three-straight 20-win seasons. As a freshman, he led the Maroons to the biggest turnaround season in NCAA history.

Tim Woodson '84 - The transfer from Ohio University played only one season for the Maroons, but was a memorable one for the basketball program. He was a Second-Team NCAA Div. III All-American, NCAA Div. III All-South Region selection and a 1984 All-ODAC First team honoree. He averaged 19.6 points and 7.8 rebounds in his only season.

Shane Abernathy '85 - A three-year starter for the Maroons, Abernathy was a First-Team NCAA Div. III All-South Region and VaSID College Division All-State selection as a senior captain. He won four-straight ODAC Championships, advanced to four NCAA Tournaments, and had four 20-win seasons. Abernathy closed his career with 1,214 career points and is ranked seventh all-time in rebounding (734). He averaged 16.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game in his final season. As a junior, averaged 13.4 points while leading the team in rebounding (7.8 rpg) and in free throw percentage (77.4%), en route to Second-Team All-ODAC honors. He was an ODAC All-Tournament team selection as his 26-point performance led the Maroons to the programs' fourth-straight conference championship.

Charles Small '88 - Small, Two-Time All-NCAA Regional Tournament Team selection, was a four-year starter for the Maroons. A 1988 All-ODAC Second-Team player, Small set an NCAA Tournament school single-game record with 13 field goals made. He finished his career at Roanoke College with 1,241 career points and ranked eighth in career rebounds (723). As a senior captain, Small averaged 14.4 points per game while leading the Maroons in blocked shots and the entire ODAC in rebounding (8.8 rpg). As a junior, he scored a career-best 31 points against Emory & Henry en route to winning the 1987 ODAC Championship and earning ODAC All-Tournament honors.

Tony Bond '82 - Bond is part of the winningest four-year class in school-history as a point guard for Ed Green. Played in three NCAA Tournaments, helped the Maroons to four-straight 20-win seasons, and captured the programs' first two ODAC Championships. His efforts in the 1982 ODAC Tournament earned him all-tournament honors. Bond was known for his shooting touch from outside and superior leaping ability.

Pat Muldowney '89 - A sharpshooter for the Maroons from 1985-89, Muldowney led the team in scoring (16 ppg) as a senior team captain. He was named Second-Team All-ODAC and VaSID All-State in 1989 and was a member of back-to-back ODAC Championship teams (1986-87). Muldowney garnered Roanoke College Male Athlete of the Year following senior year. He was voted to the 1989 ODAC All-Tournament Team.
