Roanoke College Announces Basketball All-Decade Teams (Men's and Women's 1990s)
SALEM - In conjunction with its 100 Years of Basketball Celebration, the Roanoke College athletic department has announced the Basketball All-Decade teams on Thursday, March 14th. These All-Decade squads range from the Pre-Modern Era through the 2012-13 season, and were voted on by both a panel of judges and an online poll.

One of the storied programs in the history of men's collegiate basketball, Roanoke ranks as the 20th program to win 1,300 games and ranks as one of the all-time winningest program in NCAA Division III history. The program's 21 post-season appearances and 22 conference titles are unprecedented. Roanoke had two national semi-finalist finishes in 1972 and 1983 and an NIT Final Four appearance in 1939. The Maroons claimed the NCAA College Division national title in 1972. The program boasts 14 consensus All-Americans, nearly 100 all-conference selections and 34 1,000-point scorers.

The 100 Years of Roanoke College Basketball reception will highlight a number of planned events during Alumni Weekend (April 12-13). The weekend will open on Friday, with the Roanoke College Alumni Golf Tournament. Taking place at the Roanoke Country club, the golf outing will begin at 11:00 AM with lunch, followed by a shotgun start at Noon. The 100 Years of Basketball Celebration will take place in the Wortman Ballroom on Friday evening from 8:00-10:00 PM. During the event, the recipients of the All-Decade and All-Century team awards will be recognized. On Saturday morning, the women's and men's basketball teams will hold their alumni games in the Bast Center at 10:30 and 11:30, respectively. Also on tap for the weekend, the Maroon Club will host a reception from 2:00-4:00 PM at Sutton Terrace, for all Maroon Club members to attend. Women's All-Decade Team
Karen Jenkins ‘91 - Jenkins is the sixth all-time leading scorer in team history and after the 1990-91 season became the first Maroon selected to the First Team All-American squad. She earned ODAC Player of the Year honors in 1991 and was a two-time pick to the ODAC First Team All-Star squad. In her four seasons in Salem, Jenkins led the Maroons to two conference titles. In her career, which spanned from 1988 until 1991, Jenkins scored 1,235 career points. She is also third on the team's all-time rebounding list with 724 in her RC tenure. Jenkins, who is now known as Karen Harvey, is currently an assistant coach with the Ferrum College women's basketball team.
Donna Cogar ‘92 - Cogar completed her four years of eligibility as a Roanoke College women's basketball player with 1,097 points, 536 rebounds, 243 assists, and 89 blocked shots. Her point total is still the 10th best number in team history, while her rebounding total is the ninth best mark in program history. She graduated as the college's all-time leader in blocks and is still in the top 10 in assists. The 1992 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Cogar is one of just two Maroons to ever be named First Team All-Americans.

A two-time All-ODAC selection Cogar was a member of three Maroon squads that captured Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships. She had her best season as a senior, averaging 13.3 points and 7.1 rebounds a game and leading the team in assists (81), blocks (44), and steals (73). The Maroons advanced to the NCAA ‘Sweet Sixteen' that season and Cogar went on to earn her First Team All-American accolades, that after being named the ODAC Player of the Year.

Crystal Wilson ‘95 - Wilson played two years of women's basketball at Roanoke College and also played one season of volleyball. In just two seasons with the basketball team, Wilson collected 453 rebounds, which at the time of her graduation was ninth on the all-time list. In her first year with the Maroons, Wilson was named to the Second Team All-ODAC squad and a year later went on to earn First Team All-ODAC honors as well as All-American accolades. The 1995 Roanoke College Female Athlete of the Year, Wilson ranks third in all-time scoring average for the women's basketball team, 15.6 points per game.

Marcee Hufton ‘96 - Hufton is the fifth leading scorer in the history of the women's basketball team. In her four years as a Maroon, Huftonb scored 1,251 career points. She was a two-time First Team All-ODAC selection, earning the honors in both 1995 and 1996. As a senior, Hufton was named to the WBCA Division III All-American team, earning Honorable Mention honors. The college's Co-Female Athlete of the Year in 1996, Hufton holds Roanoke College's career three-pointers made record (217), is seventh in steals (184), and fifth in assists (324).

Amy Athey '97 - Athey was an honorable mention WBCA All-American as a senior in 1996-97. In addition, she was named First-Team All-South Region, VaSID All-State, All-ODAC and GTE Academic All-District selection. She was named the 1996-97 ODAC Player of the Year, leading the Maroons to the ODAC Championship. a 25-3 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. She was a two-time ODAC Player of the Week as a senior and a three-time All-ODAC post player during her career, scoring over 1,000 points. She was named All-ODAC Tournament team in 1996 and 1997… named ODAC Tournament MVP in 1997.

Kay Caldwell '94 - Caldwell is the seventh leading scorer in women's basketball history with 1,203 career points. She was a First Team All-ODAC selection as a senior in 1994. She also rates fifth in career steals and fifth in career three-pointers made. She was on the 1993 ODAC All-Tournament Team and was the ODAC Player of the Week during her senior season. The team captain as a senior also gave coach Dunagan an ODAC Coach of the Year plaque in all of her four seasons with four ODAC Championships, Four NCAA Tournament Appearances, including a National Quarterfinalist finish in 1991 which was the furthest-ever the Maroons have advanced in the tournament. In addition, Caldwell has four-straight 20-win seasons and the last two undefeated ODAC marks (18-0) in 1990-91 and 1993-94 for Roanoke. During that span, she was on the last team to have a undefeated away record (11-0) in 1990-91 and was part of the longest home win-streak (40-straight) which included three-straight undefeated seasons at home (1989-92).

Kristie Workman '94 - The 1994 RC Female Athlete of the Year, Workman was a First-Team All-ODAC selection following the 1993-94 season which included a conference player of the week honor. The school's all-time record holder in steals left Roanoke with the career assist record until 2000 in addition to single-game records in assists (13) until 1999 and steals (10) which tied the record twice. In addition, Workman holds the single-season records in steals and assists and led the Maroons in both categories during her last two seasons. The team captain as a senior also gave coach Dunagan an ODAC Coach of the Year plaque in all of her four seasons with four ODAC Championships, Four NCAA Tournament Appearances, including a National Quarterfinalist finish in 1991 which was the furthest-ever the Maroons have advanced in the tournament. She helped lead Roanoke to four ODAC Championships and NCAA Tournament Appearances. The two-time All-ODAC selection was named All-ODAC Tournament team three-straight years (1991-93). She is a proud member of the winningest four-year class in school-history with a 97-17 record (85.1%).

Debbie Puch ‘93 - Puch, a known three-point threat during her career, finished ninth all-time in career three-pointers made (81). The two-time All-ODAC Tournament team selection (1992-93), won tournament MVP honors as a senior to capture the programs' fourth-straight ODAC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth. The senior captain earned First-Team All-ODAC honors in 1993. She is a proud member of the winningest four-year class in school-history with a 97-17 record (85.1%).

Jennifer Jones '92 - Jones was a two-time All-ODAC selection for Susan Dunagan (1991, 92). She was a member of four-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and four consecutive ODAC Championships. Finished career with a win-loss record of 97-18 (84.4%), which was the best four-year mark by the time of her graduation. Earned ODAC All-Tournament team honors as a freshmen. Named team captain as a senior and played on the best team in school-history as a junior in 1991, as they went 28-2, ranked #8 in the country and advanced to the national quarterfinals.

Men's All-Decade Team
Paris Butler '00 - Butler, who currently serves on the RC Board of Trustees, was a Josten's Trophy finalist and a GTE Academic All-District selection as a senior in 2000. A team captain in his final season, he led the Maroons to the 2000 ODAC Championship, earned an NCAA Tournament berth and a 24-5 record. Following his senior year, Butler earned the prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. A two-time All-ODAC selection for the Maroons, he connected on a single-season record 81 three-pointers. He shot 41.2 percent from three-point line which is second all-time and averaged 11.7 points during his senior year.

Derek Otten '92 - Otten ranked among the top-10 all-time in field goal percentage and blocked shots in his four-year career at Roanoke College from 1988-92. He led team in scoring and rebounding as a junior and was named team captain as a senior. As a junior, Otten finished the season ranked nationally in field goal percentage.

Nathan Hungate '98 - A three-time All-ODAC selection for the Maroons, Hungate was known throughout the conference as a playmaker and intense defender. The Northside High School product is still the career assists leader (528) and second all-time with 214 steals. He was a 1,000-point scorer and connected on 127 three-pointers. Hungate, named team captain in 1997-98, averaged 14.6 points and 5.7 assists per game during senior season. He led RC to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and ODAC Championship games, winning the title in 1996. Hungate was atop the ODAC in assists, steals and three-point percentage for most of his career. He posted career-highs of 30 points and 15 assists in his career.

Michael Murphy '92 - Murphy started at forward for the Maroons as a senior and will be remembered as a young man that overcame obstacles to achieve success. After undergoing major knee surgery as a freshman to repair torn ligaments, Murphy played sparingly as a sophomore. But instead of accepting that role Murphy worked and earned playing time and a key role for the Maroons in both his junior and senior seasons, endearing himself to teammates and opponents for his tremendous attitude and work ethic. “Murph” had the special gift of making those around him better. He passed away while playing basketball with his teammates three weeks before his graduation from Roanoke College. There's an award recognizing the student-athlete demonstrating perseverance and dedication in pursuit of his/her goals at Roanoke College, much like Mike did during his career from 1989-92.

Jon Maher '97 - Maher, a team captain in 1996-97, was a GTE Academic All-District selection as a senior in addition to earning the 1997 ODAC Woolridge Award. The Johns Hopkins transfer pulled down a NCAA Tournament school single-game record of 16 rebounds in one game (Div. III era) and led the ODAC in rebounding in 1995-96. Maher averaged 10.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in his final season with Roanoke College, as he capped a career with two ODAC Championships, four ODAC Championship games and four NCAA Tournament appearances. Maher earned back-to-back All-ODAC selections in 1996-97.

Rick Becker '93 - Becker was voted All-ODAC following his junior year in 1992. He is sixth all-time in blocked shots with 76 and was a strong post defender for the Maroons. He averaged 15.7 points and 7.6 rebounds as a senior captain, leading RC to their first 20-win season in eight years. Twice in one week as a sophomore, he scored over 25 points. He led the Maroons in rebounding and second in scoring as a junior.

Ron Pendleton '91 - Pendleton was a First-Team All-ODAC selection and a three-time ODAC Player of the Week as a junior. The Patrick Henry High School product set a Roanoke College ODAC Tournament single-game free-throws record with 12 vs. Virginia Wesleyan. He poured in a career-high 31 points vs. Averett as a junior. The 1,000-point scorer played three different positions in four years, which explains why he led the team in scoring, assists, steals and rebounding throughout his career. Quite the playmaker as a sophomore as he had to play point guard, he dished out 10 or more assists on five occasions and set a new single-season record (147). He finished second on the career assists list (351) and fourth in career steals (119) by graduation. He totaled six steals on three occasions as a senior.

Dustin Fonder '94 - A two-sport athlete at Roanoke, Dustin Fonder was a soccer and basketball standout during his four years in a Maroon uniform. On the hardwood, Fonder was a three-year letterman for Page Moir's men's basketball team. The point guard finished his career with 369 assists, third on the all-time list and his 119 steals ranks him 12th all-time. As a senior, Fonder's 158 assists set a new single-season record which he still holds today. As a junior in 1992-93, Fonder helped lead the Maroons to their first 20-win season in eight years. The following year, Roanoke went 26-2 and captured the ODAC Championship along with an NCAA Tournament berth for the first time in seven years.

Kevin Martin '94 - Martin, who was team captain as a senior, helped guide the Maroons to a 26-2 record, a 22-game win-streak, an ODAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. The state's leading scorer coming out of high school, Martin led the Maroons in three-pointers and free-throw percentage, averaging 11 points per game as a sophomore and junior. A three-year starter, Martin finished his career ranked in the top-10 in steals, assists, three-point percentage and three-pointers made while scoring nearly 1,000 points.

Tim Braun '97 - Braun was named 1996 ODAC Tournament MVP for his 48-point, 23-rebound tournament performance, leading the Maroons to their third-straight post-season appearance. He was part of four-straight NCAA Tournaments, ODAC Championship games, winning two in 1994 and 1996, and two 20-win seasons. He was named All-ODAC in 1996 as a junior, as he nearly averaged a double-double. Braun immediately made an impact to the lineup as he was tournament MVP in both regular season tournaments in addition to the conference tournament in 1996.
