Maroons Win 2014 Dick Leftwich V-Foundation Classic Championship 80-66
SALEM – The Roanoke College men's basketball team won the 2014 Dick LEftwich V-Foundation Classic on Saturday, defeating Ursinus College 80-66.  The Maroons are on a three game win-streak, with an overall record of 6-4, while the Bears exit Salem with an overall mark of 2-9.
 
Julian Ramirez earned All-Tournament MVP honors on Saturday afternoon, as he scored a team-high 18 points.  He sealed his award by adding seven assists, four rebounds three steals and shooting 8-11 from the field.  Daniel Eacho was also named to the all tournament team, scoring 15 points, shooting 7-12 and pulling down seven rebounds.
 
Another important note from the Saturday contest, was that Roanoke scored 40 of its 80 points from just three players who came off the bench.  John Fitchett scored a career high 15 points, adding five rebounds and two blocks.  Andrew Daniels finished the game with 15 points, shooting 5-9 and dishing out four assists.  Seth Bradley tallied 11 points, hitting 2-4 from behind the arc and pulled down five rebounds.
 
The Maroons opened the contest on a 6-0 run, with four points from Ramirez and a layup from Eacho.  The Bears responded with a 7-2 run to pull within one, 8-7 at the 14:51 mark.  Over the next four minutes, the contest saw four lead changes, with Roanoke taking a 13-11 lead off of an Andrew Daniels trey.  Seth Bradley followed suit with a three pointer of his own to give Roanoke a five point lead.  The Maroons' five-point advantage maintained through the final minutes of the first half.  With 2:33 to play, Malik Draper hit a layup to bring the bears back within one, 26-25.  The Maroons closed out the half with five consecutive points from John Fitchett, as Roanoke entered the locker room ahead by six, 31-25.
 
John Fitchett led the Maroons at the half with 11 points, shooting 4-6 from the field.  Stefan Vulevic and Daniel Eacho led the Maroons in rebounds with four each.
 
In the second half, Roanoke scored first with a jumper from Daniel Eacho, taking an eight point lead.  The Bears went on a 6-0 run with a three from Trevor Norton, along with three free throws.  The Maroons extended its lead again to eight at the 15:27 mark as Julian Ramirez hit an old fashioned three point play to go ahead 42-34.  In just two minutes Ursinus charged, getting within three, 42-39.  However the Maroons answered with an 8-0 run that gave the Maroons a ten point lead, 49-39 with 11:29 to play.   Roanoke continued to create distance as John Fitchett hit a jumper with 7:52 to play as Roanoke went up by 17, 66-49.  The Maroons' largest lead came with just 3:59 to play in the half as a Fitchett free throw put the Raonoke up by 18, 74-56.  Roanoke's large lead held through the remainder of the contest as Roanoke picked up the 80-66 victory over Ursinus.
 
Roanoke outshot Ursinius 52.5 to 42.1 percent from the field, and held an advantage from behind the arc as well, 23.0 to 27.6 percent.  The Maroons also led in rebounds (39-31), assists (17-13) and turnovers (16-14).
 
The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, January 8th as they travel to Ashland to take on Randolph-Macon.  Roanoke opens up ODAC play against the Yellow Jackets in a 7:00 PM contest.
