Roanoke Wins ODAC Contest, Defeats Emory & Henry 81-61
SALEM – The Roanoke College men's basketball team picked up its first win in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action in convincing fashion, defeating Emory & Henry 81-61 on Wednesday night.  The Maroons now have a record of 7-8; 1-6 in ODAC play, while the Wasps now sit with a record of 2-14; 0-7 in the ODAC.
 
Daniel Eacho led the Maroons in scoring, netting 22 points on the evening.  He has been averaging almost 17 points per game this season and shot 7-for-11 from the field this evening to raise his per-game average.  He shot an impressive 8-8 from the free throw line as well.  Eacho still in the top five in both points (3rd – 17.3) and rebounds (2nd – 10.0) per game, averaging a double-double on the season.
 
Four different Maroons scored in the opening five minutes of the first half, as Roanoke jumped out to an 8-1 lead.  With 13:23 to play in the half, Andrew Daniels scored his fourth point of the game, as Roanoke took a 12-3 lead.  By midway in the first half, the Maroons had held the Wasps to just seven points, while building a 11 point lead.  The Maroons continued to put the pressure on the Wasps, as they outscored them 18-11 through the 3:26 mark.  With 1:36 to play in the first half, Daniel Eacho dropped in a pair of free throws, marking his 14th point of the game, as well as doubling Emory & Henry's score with a 40-20 lead.  Ramirez finished the half with two more free throws as Roanoke entered the locker room with a 42-20 advantage.
 
Eacho scored the first four points of the second half for the Maroons, while Cameron Smith dropped in another two, as Roanoke opened on a 6-0 run.  Starting at the 16:01 mark, where Roanoke had a 26-point 51-25 lead, the Maroons held Emory & Henry scoreless over the next three minutes.  During that span, Roanoke scored another 10 points, with five different Maroons finding the bottom of the net.  With 9:37 to play, Roanoke hit what would be its largest lead of the game, as Alexander Weant hit a jumper to give the Maroons a 37-point, 68-31 lead.  Over the next three minutes, Emory & Henry went on a 13-2 run, bringing the Wasps back within 26.  After a Daniels three pointer, the Wasps went on another run, this time being an 8-4 stretch.  Emory & Henry started to close the gap towards the end of the game, but Roanoke's lead was too great, as the Maroons picked up the ODAC victory, 81-61.
 
Andrew Daniels posted 17 points on the night, shooting 7-9 from the field, including a perfect 2-2 from behind the arc.  Marcus Scott put up a career high 12 points, shooting 6-8 from the floor, doubling his previous career high of six points.  Cameron Smith led all players in rebounds, pulling down six boards on the night.  Julian Ramirez finished the game with five rebounds, thee assists and four steals to go with his nine points.
 
The Maroons outshot the Wasps 52.5 to 37.5 percent from the field.  Emory & Henry held the edge on rebounds, pulling down 40 to Roanoke's 37.  Emory & Henry also had 22 turnovers to Roanoke's 19.  The Maroons held the advantage in assists as well 12-7.
 
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, January 25th as they play host to Randolph-Macon and 3:30 PM.  That game is going to be a part of Maroon Madness, Roanoke's men's and women's double header against the Yellow Jackets.  During Maroon Madness, there will be giveaways, prizes, raffles and contests, so be sure to come on out and join in on the fun!
