Men's Basketball Falls in ODAC Play to Guilford 75-71 on Wednesday
GREENSBORO – The Roanoke College men's basketball team battled Guilford College down to the wire, but fell in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action 75-71.  The Maroons now have a record of 9-10, 3-8 in ODAC play, while the Quakers are 15-5, 9-2 in the ODAC.
 
Andrew Daniels scored 23 points on the night, hitting 5-for-10 from behind the arc.  He also added three rebounds and three assists.  Daniels hit nine baskets from the floor, his second highest total made for the season behind his game against Shenandoah where he tallied 28 points on 10 made baskets.  The ODAC's reigning Player of the Week, Daniel Eacho finished with 22 points, shooting 10-16 from the floor.  He is averaging 22.7 points per game in his last three games.  Also scoring a career high was John Fitchett who tallied 19 points.  He shot 7-15 on the night, and added five rebounds and a team high two blocks.
 
Julian Ramirez dished out a career high 10 assists on the evening.  He now ha 242 assists, moving into 11th all-time at Roanoke, passing both Jared Butler '06 (232) and Brad Dunleavy '01 (238).
 
The Quakers got the jump early on the Maroons, as Jake Hopkins scored the first five points in a span of 23 seconds.  Guilford's Josh Spainhour hit another jumper to keep the 7-0 streak going.  On the next drive for the Maroons, Andrew Daniels put Roanoke's first points on the board with a three pointer assisted by Julian Ramirez.  After a Guilford tip-in, the Maroons went on a 12-0 run, with five points from Daniel Eacho, three points from John Fitchett, and two each from Daniels and Cameron Smith.  With 13:25 on the clock, Roanoke had a 15-9 lead.
 
A few minutes later, Daniels and Fitchett each knocked down a three pointer to give Roanoke its largest lead of the contest of eight points, 21-13.  Over a four-minute span, Guilford outscored Roanoke 8-2, pulling back within two points, 23-21 with 8:14 to play.  Roanoke went on a run of its own, going on a 7-1 run to pull back ahead by eight, 30-22.  During that run, baskets came from Eacho,, Seth Bradley and another trey from Daniels.  With 3:47 remaining in the half, Roanoke led by nine, but Guilford closed out the half on an 8-2 run.  The Maroons entered the locker room at half with a two point, 34-32 lead.
 
Daniels remained hot in the second half, opening up on the first drive with a three pointer, followed by scoring a layup to give Roanoke a seven-point lead.  The Quakers answered with two baskets of their own, but Eacho matched that with a pair of jumpers to bring Roanoke back up by seven, 43-36.  After another Guilford Basket, Daniels knocked down a trey again, putting the Maroons up by eight.  The Quakers cut down on Roanoke's lead with a 7-0 run, spurred by Matt McCarthy and Zeb Richardson.  With 13:53, Roanoke led by one, 46-45.  John Fitched scored on the next trip down the floor, but Robbie Stokely scored an old-fashioned three-point play for Guilford, tying the game at 48-48 with 11:34 to play.
 
Over the next two minutes Fitchett hit a jumper and a pair of free throws to put the Maroons ahead by four, 52-48 with 9:58 on the clock.  Through the 6:59 mark, Guilford went on a 10-4 run, claiming a two-point lead.  Fitchett tied the game again for the Maroons with a jumper at 6:05.  The teams traded a basket each over the next minute staying tied, this time at 60-60.  Zeb Richardson scored the next four points for Guilford, starting a 9-4 run, in which Richardson would score once more.  With 1:41 to play, Roanoke trailed by five, 69-64.  Eacho hit a pair of layups over the next minute to bring the Maroons back within three, 71-68.
 
After Zachary Houston hit a pair of free throws to put the Quakers up by five, Fitchett knocked down a trey, to pull within two, 73-71.  The Maroons quickly fouled, but Guilford's McCarthy hit both free throws to back ahead by four, 75-51.  That score would hold as the final as Roanoke fell to Guilford 75-71 in ODAC action.
 
Both teams hit 29 shots from the floor on the evening, with Roanoke holdin a 32.0 to 20.0 percent advantage from behind the arc.  The Quakers led in rebounds 42-38, while the Maroons, aided by Ramirez, led in assists 23-15.
 
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, February 8th as they play at Shenandoah University.  That contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
