Maroons Hold Off Shenandoah to Win ODAC Contest 80-75 on Saturday
WINCHESTER – The Roanoke College men's basketball team won its third ODAC contest in its last four games, defeating Shenandoah University 80-75 on Saturday.  The Maroons now have a record of 10-10, 4-8 in ODAC play, while the Hornets sit with a mark of 12-9, 4-8 in the ODAC.
 
Daniel Eacho led the Maroons with an impressive 27 point outing, backed by 15 rebounds for his sixth double-double this season.  He shot 9-10 from the free throw line, while also doling out one block.  Also in double figures for the Maroons were Julian Ramirez and Andrew Daniels.  Ramirez finished with 17 points on 7-12 shooting.  He also tallied four rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Daniels tallied 12 points, with one rebound and two assists.  Cameron Smith pulled down 11 rebounds on the afternoon as well.
 
Ramirez scored the opening points for Roanoke, but Shenandoah tallied three more over the next minute and a half to take a 3-2 lead over the Maroons.  Starting at 16:18, Roanoke went on a 12-2 run which saw six points from each, and baskets from Ethan Humphries, Daniels and Ramirez.  With 12:53 in the first half, Roanoke led 14-5.  As the Hornets tried to come back in the contest, the Maroons battled back with three pointers from John Fitchett, Stefan Vulevic and Seth Bradley.  By the 9:23 mark, Roanoke led 23-12.
 
Over the next couple of minutes, the Hornets and Maroons traded baskets until Jared Carithers and Avery Green started a 6-0 run for Shenandoah, pulling within six, 29-23.  The Maroons scored 10 more points by 3:16 off of free throws and a jumper from Ramirez, taking a 39-24 advantage.  The Hornets did not take the deficit lightly as they held the Maroons scoreless over the final three minutes on a 9-0 run.  As the teams entered the  locker room at half, Roanoke still held on to a 39-32 advantage.
 
Roanoke started the second half out on an 8-2 run that ran the span of the first 3:39, pulling ahead by 13, 47-34.  Shenandoah went on a run of its own over the next four minutes, outscoring the Maroons 7-2 and getting back within eight, 49-41.  Roanoke pushed back on the Shenandoah attack, with Andrew Daniels hitting a pair of three-pointers to keep the Maroons up 13, 57-44.  But the Hornets stayed resilient, as Green started a 10-4 run with a  three pointer, scoring three more points in the run as well.   Roanoke's lead slipped to seven with 8:50 to play.
 
Green scored five more points a few minutes later, getting the Hornets within four of the Maroons, 64-60.  Andrew Daniels hit a pair of free throws at 3:34, giving the Maroons an eight point, 73-65 cushion.  Jared Carithers and Green quickly scored five points between them to cut the lead back to four.  Shenandoah's Kevin Lecsaint scored an old-fashioned three point play with 2:04 on the clock to cut Roanoke's advantage to one, 73-72. John Fitchett hit a jumper at 1:29, as well as free throws in the final 35 seconds to go back up by five, 77-72.  After a Ramirez free throw at :15, Avery Green hit a three pointer to cut the deficit to three.  Shenandoah quickly fouled Ethan Humphries, who knocked down both free throws to keep the Maroons ahead by five, and pick up the 80-75 win over Sheanndoah.
 
The Maroons outshot Shenandoah 42.2 to 36.2 percent from the field, while also holding the advantage on the free throw line 75 to 56.2 percent.  Roanoke also outrebounded Shenandoah 48-45 and also led in assists 11-9. 
 
The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, February 12th as they play host to Randolph College.  That contest is scheduled for 5:00 PM, with a women's basketball game to follow.
