Men's Basketball Edged by Emory & Henry on Wednesday
EMORY – In the final road game of the regular season for the Roanoke College men's basketball team, the Maroons were narrowly edged Emory & Henry (4-20, 2-13 ODAC) on Wednesday, 77-75.  The Maroons now have a record of 11-12 and are 5-10 in conference play.
 
The Maroons had a nearly identical stat sheet with the Wasps, narrowly leading in field goal percentage (42.6 to 41.1 percent), rebounds (46-44) and blocks (3-2).  However, Emory & Henry finished with 11 steals to Roanoke's three, and the Wasps just made one more shot than the Maroons (30-29).
 
John Fitchett came off the bench to have a career night, scoring 23 points to lead the team.  He finished 9-16 on the evening, also pulling down five rebounds and dishing out four assists.  Fitchett has played well for the Maroons in the last five games, scoring in double-figures in four of the last five contests.  Daniel Eacho was second in scoring, netting 17 points on the night, narrowly missing a double-double with nine rebounds.  Seth Bradley and Cameron Smith also finished in double-figures, scoring 13 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Eacho and Smith scored the first four points for the Maroons in the opening minute of the contest as the two teams got off to a 4-4 start.  Emory & Henry got on a roll early, starting a 9-0 run that ran through the 15:32 mark as the Wasps jumped out to a 13-4 advantage.  With 13:15 to play, Emory & Henry hit its largest lead of the game of 12 points, after Charles Smith hit a jumper to make the score 22-10. 
 
Roanoke fought back over the next five minutes, going on a 18-4 run.  The run was led by John Fitchett who tallied nine of the 18 points during the five minute span.  With 7:42 to play, Roanoke had reclaimed the lead on a Fitchett jumper, going ahead 28-26.  After the Wasps went up again, 31-28, Seth Bradley knocked down back-to-back three pointers, to put the Maroons back up by three, 34-31.  The Maroons were held to just four points in the final two minutes, as Emory & Henry led by two , 40-38 entering halftime.
 
Cameron Smith scored four of Roanoke's opening eight points in the second half, as Roanoke led by four with 16:40 to play.  Tyler Mullins helped the Wasps get back ahead, scoring four of the team's six points over the next minute, reclaiming the lead for Emory & Henry.  Fitchett came up big again with the next three pointer to take the lead again.  The Wasps went on an 8-0 run led by Brandon Self with four points going back up by six, 55-49.  Over the next six minutes, the lead would change hand six times, as Emory & Henry ended up with the 64-63 lead with 6:43 to play.
 
Julian Ramirez tied the game at 67-67 after a layup with 4:01 to play.  Emory & Henry knocked down its free throws down the stretch as the Wasps led 74-70 with 1:34 to play after a pair of Brandon Self free throws.  On the next possession, Daniel Eacho hit a layup to cut the deficit to two.  After an Emory & Henry foul, Ethan Humphries hit one of two free throws, as Roanoke now trailed by one, 74-73 with 40 second left.  The Wasps' Stephen Brown hit a single free throw to let Emory & Henry go ahead by two, 77-75 with 11 seconds to play.  Julian Ramirez put up a layup with one second on the clock, but it wouldn't fall, as Roanoke dropped the ODAC matchup to Emory & Henry 77-75.
 
Five Wasps scored in double figures as only three points came off the bench on the night.  Brandon Self led with 21 points, along with nine rebounds.  Charles Smith had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Malcom Green finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and six steals, leading all players in the category.
 
While the Maroons led in field goal percentage, rebounds, assists (17-10) and bench points (40-3), Roanoke also led in three point percentage 53.8 to 12.5 percent, hitting 7-of-13.
 
The Maroons finish the regular season at home on Saturday, February 22nd as they host Hampden-Sydney in the Bast Center for a 2:00 PM game.  The contest will also serve as Senior Day for four seniors: Patrick Cummings, Stefan Vulevic, Ethan Humphries and Jonathan Smith.  Head Coach Page Moir will also be looking for career victory #399 heading into the ODAC Tournament next week.
