Maroons Cruise in 97-85 Victory Over Cougars
SALEM – The Roanoke men's basketball team led from tip to the final buzzer in its 97-85 victory over Averett University on Wednesday evening.  The Maroons now have a record of 3-3, while the Cougars sit with a mark of 3-3.
 
The Maroons hold a 17-1 record all time against Averett, with this being the fifth consecutive win against the Cougars.  The two teams entered the contest having both played Washington and Lee in their last contest.  The Maroons fell to the Generals on November 30th, 87-84 in OT, while the Cougars won the non-conference match 70-62.
 
Andrew Daniels posted a team high 20 points in the contest over the Cougars, scoring 13 of those in just five minutes of play in the first half.  In those five minutes, Daniels was 3-3 from behind the arc and 4-4 from the free throw line.  Daniel Eacho posted his third double-double of the season, as he is averaging 17.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.  Eacho ranks second in the ODAC in rebounds per game. 
 
Also in double figures for the Maroons were Julian Ramirez and John Fitchett, who scored 14 and 12 points, respectively. Ramirez dished out five assists and made three steals on the evening, while Fitchett was 5-7 from the field tonight.
 
The Maroons outshot Averett from the field 55.2 to 44.1 percent, Roanoke's best shooting game of the year, and third over 50 percent this season.  Roanoke also shot 41.2 percent from behind the arc, while Averett shot 37.5 percent from three point land.  The Cougars narrowly out rebounded the Maroons (38-36), while Roanoke held the assists advantage (19-13).
 
In the first half, Roanoke spent the first six minutes building a 16-8 lead.  At this point, Daniels enters the contest for the Maroons.  With 13:32 to play in the first, Daniels hits his first three pointer of the game, giving Roanoke a 19-10 advantage.  Over the next four minutes, Daniels hits four free throws and knocks down another pair of treys as the Maroons now lead by 17, 33-16 over Averett.  In the next possession, Seth Bradley hit a three pointer of his own.  Roanoke With 4:57 to play in the first half, Marcus Scott hit a layup to give the Maroons what would be their largest lead in the game of 24 points, 45-21.  At halftime, Roanoke led by 17, 53-36.
 
The Maroons continued to hold their lead in the second half, but the Cougars would start to come back.  With 13:31 left in the contest, Averett's Jacolby Hawkins hit a jump shot to pull the Cougars within 12, 61-49.  The Maroons hit their next three baskets to build the lead back out to 16.  The Cougars kept knocking oat the door, as Carter Jones scored four points, and Hawkins hit a trey to cut the deficit to 11.  Roanoke's lead stayed above 10 points, even when Hawkins hit a three with 4:29 on the clock to take the score to 78-68 Roanoke.  The Maroons final possessions of the contests were made free throws from Ramirez, Eacho and Daniels as the Maroons walk away with the 97-85 victory.
 
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, December 7th as they play host to ODAC opponent, Eastern Mennonite University.  That contest is slated for a 1:00 PM start.  The Men play the first game of a Roanoke Basketball double-header, as the women's team will be in action at approximately 3:00 PM, when they play Virginia Wesleyan in the Bast Center.
