Men's Basketball Edged in Overtime by Eastern Mennonite on Saturday
SALEM – The Roanoke College men's basketball team battled Eastern Mennonite University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday, falling 81-79 in overtime.  The Maroons now have a record of 3-4; 0-2 ODAC, while the Royals sit with a mark of 4-3; 1-1 in ODAC play.
 
Andrew Daniels put up his second consecutive 20-point game, hitting eight field goals.  He also finished with seven rebounds, as did Cameron Smith and Seth Bradley.  Daniel Eacho recorded his third straight double double, scoring 18 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.  The ODAC's assist leader, Julian Ramirez finished with a game high five assists, along with nine points.
 
Eastern Mennonite jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the opening moments of the contest, as four different Royals scored in the drive.  The Maroons responded with a 7-2 run of their own, with Andrew Daniels scoring five of the seven points to tie the game at 11-11.  Over the next nine minutes, through the 6:55 mark, Eastern Mennonite built a lead as large as 12, 34-22.  Roanoke held the Royals scoreless in the final four minutes of the first half, as the Maroons posted a 10-0 run, capped off by two Stefan Vulevic free throws.  As the teams entered the locker room, Roanoke trailed by two, 41-39.
 
The Maroons continued their run from the first half, scoring the first six points of the second half, taking a 47-43 lead.  EMU's Marcel Crup scored six consecutive points a few minutes later, giving the Royals a two point, 49-47 lead.  Roanoke reclaimed the lead shortly thereafter, and had its largest lead of the game of six points (65-59) with 7:56 to play.  The Royals put up a 12-4 run though the 1:37 mark, taking a 71-69 lead.  Neither team could find the net in the final minute, until Julian Ramirez was fouled with three seconds to play.  He knocked down a pair of free throws to send the game to overtime.
 
In the overtime period, the two teams kept it close, as EMU took the initial 72-71 lead off of a free throw by Woody Furbush.  Seth Bradley and Andrew Daniels reclaimed the lead for Roanoke with a layup from each.  However, Ryan Yates from EMU scored six of the Royals' final eight points, giving EMU an 81-79 lead with five seconds to play.  John Fitchett put up Roanoke's final chance in the game, with a three-pointer, but it missed the mark and the Maroons fell, 81-79 to EMU in overtime.
 
The Royals held a better shooting percentage (48.5) than the Maroons (44.0) in the Saturday afternoon contest.  Roanoke held the advantage from the free throw line, 58.8 percent to 52.0 percent.  The Maroons also boasted a 46-43 rebound lead, as well as a 19-9 assist margin in the game.
 
The Maroons take a long hiatus for the winter break, not playing their next game until December 30th.  In the Monday contest, Roanoke will host Frostburg State University at the Bast Center.  That game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
