Maroons Edged By Quakers in Final Seconds of ODAC Contest
SALEM – The Roanoke College men's basketball team fell in the final moments of its ODAC contest against Guilford College on Wednesday evening, 66-64.  The Maroons now have a record of 6-6, 1-2 in the ODAC, while the Quakers have a 9-3 overall mark, 2-1 in ODAC play.
 
Andrew Daniels led the Maroons in scoring with 13 points, hitting six field goals from the floor.  Three other players finished in double-figures for the Maroons.  Julian Ramirez put together 11 points, as well as a team-high five assists.  Daniel Eacho and Carter Wright each tallied 10 points, while Eacho finished with six rebounds.  Wright led the team in rebounds with eight, while Ramirez led the team in steals with two.
 
It was a three-point frenzy to open the first half, as both teams hit pairs of treys in the initial two minutes of the contest.  Julian Ramirez and John Fitchett each hit the three-pointers for the Maroons, while Trever Hyatt and Will Koppenhaver tallied the treys for the Quakers.  The opening long range start to the game led to 14 more three-point attempts over the first 10 minutes of the game.  The Quakers jumped out to a 13-7 lead at 14:07, until Andrew Daniels hit another three-pointer for the Maroons a few seconds later.  Starting at 9:15, trailing by eight, Roanoke started a 7-0 run, which included four points from Eacho and a three from Carter Wright, pulled the Maroons with two points.  The Quakers responded with a 7-0 run of their own to go back up by nine points.  Wright retaliated with a 5-0 run by himself, getting the Maroons back to a 27-23 deficit.  Guilford finished the half on a 13-7 run, entering the locker room ahead by 10, 40-30.
 
Roanoke completely erased the 10-point deficit, going on a 10-0 run to open the second half.  Julian Ramirez put up six points, while Fitchett and Daniels scored two points each.  However, Guilford scored six quick points to extend the lead over the Maroons.  The Guilford lead rose to as much as seven points, until Daniels, Wright and Bradley combined for five points, to pull back within two, 51-49 with 11:27 to play.  Roanoke tied the game again at 52-52 on a Joey Miller free throw after traversing the court with a flurry of jukes.  Coming down the stretch, the Maroons trailed by three, 62-59 after a jumper by Eacho, with Smith knocking down a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to one.  Freshman Miller hit a huge layup with 12 seconds to play, with a subsequent free throw to tie the game at 64-64.  However, the Quakers found an open Matt McCarthy under the basket for the game winning basket with three seconds to play, as the Maroons were topped by the Quakers on Wednesday.
 
Johnny Rice led all players with 27 points, shooting 10-18 from the field.  He also completed a double-double with 10 rebounds in the contest.  Also in double-figures for the Quakers were Will Koppenhaver and Matt McCarthy with 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Zachary Houston led all players for Guilford in assists (5) and steals (3). 
 
The Quakers narrowly outshot the Maroons 39.7 to 38.6 percent from the field, while also holding the advantage on the free throw line, 78.6 to 68.2 percent.  Roanoke led in rebounds 44-35, as well as assists, 13-9.  Roanoke's lead in rebounds aided in leading in second chance points, 18-14.  The Maroons also led in points off the bench, 20-10.
 
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, January 10th as they travel o take on Randolph College.  That contest is scheduled for a 4:30 PM start.
