Maroons Victorious In Packed Bast Center, Defeat Bridgewater 88-71
SALEM – The packed Bast Center saw the Roanoke College men's basketball team put on a stellar performance against Bridgewater in the Maroons' 88-71 win over the Eagles.  Roanoke now has a record of 7-10, 2-6 in the ODAC, while Bridgewater is now 9-8-4-4 in ODAC play.
 
With the win today, head coach Page Moir picked up his 250th Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory.  Over the course of his first 25 seasons as head coach of the Maroons, Moir has won just under 10 ODAC games per season, averaging 9.92 each year.  Between the 1991-92 seeason and the 1997-98 season, Moir put together seven consecutive 10-plus win seasons. Moir, President of the NABC, has won three ODAC championships and was named ODAC Coach of the Year in 1994.

Roanoke shot 54.7 percent from the field on the afternoon, the Maroons best shooting performance this season.  There have been three other games in the 2014-15 campaign that the Maroons have shot over 50 percent from the field, the other three coming before the holiday break.
 
Daniel Eacho led the Maroons with 19 points, shooting 6-10 from the field.  He also finished 7-9 from the free throw line, while pulling down seven boards.  Three other Maroons finished in double-figures.  Andrew Daniels went for 17 points, shooting 7-13 on the afternoon, going 3-6 from downtown.  Julian Ramirez tallied 15 points with four assists and four steals.  John Fitchett was 4-7 with 10 points, while Cameron Smith was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.  Smith also led the squad with five of the team's 18 steals.
 
The contest was a part of Maroon Madness, an event put on by Roanoke's SGA.  The event saw the stands packed with students in support of the women's and men's basketball teams over the double-header Saturday afternoon.  Free t-shirts were given away, as well as prizes for in-game contests, raffles and door prizes.
 
Roanoke jumped out to a 10-3 advantage in the first seven minutes of play.  Daniel Eacho put up four points in the opening moments, while baskets also fell for Ramirez, Daniels and Alex Weant.  Starting with a five point streak by John Fitchett, Roanoke went on a 16-6 run that the course of eight minutes, giving the Maroons a 30-14 lead with 6:56 to play in the half.  During that span, Fitchett tallied 10 of the team's 16 points.  Roanoke and Bridgewater traded baskets, with Roanoke gaining one more point on the Eagles after an Andrew Daniels three pointer, putting the Maroons ahead by 17, 37-20 with 5:17 left in the half. Daniels hit another three-pointer, as well as a layup while Smith added three points in the closing moments of the half, as Roanoke entered the locker room ahead 46-32.
 
Despite Bridgewater's Matthew Hunter hitting a three-pointer in the opening seconds of the half, Roanoke kept Bridgewater at bay for the entire second half.  With 17:36 to play, Daniels knocked down another three, following that up with a layup for a 16-point 55-39 advantage.  With 11 minutes to play, Matthew Hunter capped off a 9-1 run that brought the Eagles back within 10, 61-51.  Reddick added another layup to cut the Roanoke lead to eight.  Roanoke still led by eight with 8;06 to play until Eacho knocked down a jumper, followed by a three-pointer by freshman Joey Miller, boosting the Maroons back ahead by 13 points.  Roanoke held the lead around 10 points for the remainder of the contest, Benaiah Wise hit the final field goal for the Eagles at 3:21 to get within nine, but Roanoke closed out the contest on a 10-2 run, capped by two Eli Sumpter free throws.  The Maroons were victorious in front of the massive home crowd, 88-71 in ODAC play.
 
The ODAC's leader in scoring, Ed Reddick, finished the contest with 21 points, shooting 8-11 from the field.  He also led the Eagles with seven rebounds.  Matthew Hunter tallied 14 points, while Kyle Welty finished with 13.
 
Roanoke outshot Bridgewater 54.7 to 44.8 percent from the field, while the Eagles held the 41.7 to 33.3 percent advantage from behind the arc.  Roanoke outrebounded Bridgewater 39-26, as well as leading in assists 13-11.  Roanoke took advantage of Bridgewater's 15 turnovers, leading in points off turnovers 21-14.
 
The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, January 28th as they face off against Lynchburg in the Bast Center.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
