Maroons Drop ODAC Contest to Guilford on Wednesday
GREENSBORO– The Roanoke College men's basketball team ran into a high-scoring Guilford offense on Wednesday evening, falling 103-78.  The Maroons now have a record of 9-13, 4-9 in ODAC play, while the Quakers are 16-6, 9-4 in the ODAC.

Andrew Daniels led the Maroons in scoring with 25 points, his highest scoring total of the season.  Daniels shot 10-17 from the field, including a 4-8 mark from behind the arc.  With his 25 points on the evening, Daniels becomes the leading scorer for the Maroons, averaging 14.9 points per game.  Daniels now has 934 career points, putting him just 66 points from being the second Maroon this season to join the 1,000 point club.  With three regular season games and an ODAC Tournament first round game still guaranteed, Daniels would need to average 16.5 points per game to reach the 1,000 point mark.

John Fitchett was second on the squad with 19 points, his third highest scoring total of the year.  He went 6-14 from the floor, with a 5-6 mark from the free throw line.  He tallied five rebounds, tying Daniel Eacho and Alex Weant for a team high in the category.  Julian Ramirez led the squad in assists with five, as well as steals with two.

Daniels scored the first five points for the Maroons in the game, as Roanoke got out to a 5-3 lead in the opening two minutes.  Fitchett added a jumper at 17:13 as the Maroons took a 7-3 advantage.  The Quakers went on a 7-0 run over the next minute to take a quick 10-7 lead.  Eacho hit a jumper, followed by a Daniels three pointer, as the Maroons reclaimed the lead, 12-10 with 14:48 left in the half.  However this would be the start of a series of runs for the Quakers that would run the course of the first half.  Guilford started with a 9-0 run to go ahead 19-12 with 11:35 to play.  Seth Bradley broke up the runs a bit with a pair of three pointers, keeping the Maroons within six points, 24-18 with 10:11 left.  Guilford spent the remainder of the first half on a 27-6 run to take a 51-24 lead entering halftime.

The Quakers picked up where they left off in the first half, hitting a pair of three-pointers in the opening minute to extend the Quaker lead to 57-24.  In fact, Guilford's first four baskets of the second half were three pointers.  With 15 minutes to play, Guilford led the Maroons by 40, but Roanoke continued to battle back.  John Fitchett hit back to back three pointers to get the ball rolling for the Maroons.  With 12:36, the Maroons started a run of their own, as Seth Bradley hit a jumper to start a 10-3 run.  During that span, Weant scored three points as well as did Eli Sumpter, who knocked down a trey of his own.

Andrew Daniels put together five points, starting with a three-pointer, followed by a layup to cut the deficit to 27 points, 78-51.  Daniels hit another three pointer at 6:29 to get the Maroons back within 25.  While Roanoke outscored Guilford 54-52 in the second half, the deficit from the first half was too large to overcome, as the Maroons fell 103-78 on Wednesday.

The Quakers had five players score in double figures, led by Will Freeman, who scored 21 points off the bench.  Freeman shot 8-11 in the contest, with a 5-5 mark from the free throw line.  Trever Hyatt, Jonny Rice and Matt McCarthy each finished with 15 points.  Hyatt went 4-9 from behind the arc, while Rice was 6-11 with six rebounds.  Cole Green led the squad in boards with seven for the game.  Jarrod Rogers finished with 11 points as well, dishing out six assists in the process.

Guilford outshot Roanoke 50. To 43.9 percent from the field, including a 43.3 to 35.5 mark from behind the arc.  Guilford also went 84 percent from the free throw line, while Roanoke hit 69.2 of its free throws.  The Quakers topped the Maroons in rebounds 42-33.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, February 14th as they play host to Hampden-Sydney in the Bast Center.  That contest is scheduled for a 3:30 PM start.
