Roanoke Tops Hampden-Sydney in Double Overtime Thriller on Saturday
SALEM – The third time is the charm for the Roanoke College basketball team as they picked up a double-overtime victory over Hampden-Sydney 82-78 on Saturday afternoon.  The Maroons are now 10-13, 5-9 in ODAC play, while the Tigers are 14-9, 7-7 in ODAC play.

Roanoke has played in three games this season that have gone into double overtime conditions, however this is the first of those three where the Maroons emerged victorious.  The Maroons also evened the score against Hampden-Sydney, as Roanoke lost to the Tigers on December 3rd, 71-67.

Andrew Daniels led the Maroons in scoring with 22 points on the night.  He put together five three pointers, including the buzzer beater at the end of regulation to send the contest to overtime.  This is the third consecutive game Daniels has been the top scorer for Roanoke, averaging 22 points per game over those three contests.  With his 22 points tonight, he is now ranked 35th all-time in scoring at Roanoke College with 956 points, and needs just 44 more points to join the ranks of the 1,000 point club.  With two regular season games and one guaranteed ODAC Tournament game to play, Daniels needs over 14 points per game to reach the milestone. He is currently ranked sixth in total points in the ODAC with 349 points, as well as sixth in points per game (15.2).  Daniels also ranks third in the conference in three-pointers made, knocking down 60 this season.

Daniel Eacho was second on the squad in scoring with 15 points.  Eacho has cracked the top-20 all-time scorers with a total of 1261 for his career.  The next three Maroons ahead of Eacho on the all-time list are James Pennix '88 (1,273), Morris Cregger '64 (1,284) and Kwasi Amponsah '13 (1,291).  Daniel Eacho also put together a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, his fifth double-double of the year. Also in double-figures were Julian Ramirez, who netted 13 points, and John Fitchett who tallied 11.  Cameron Smith finished the game with 10 rebounds on the night.

Roanoke trailed at halftime and saw a 10-point deficit in the second half, but the Maroons battled against the Tigers.  The Maroons took their first lead of the second half at 10:54 as Ramirez hit a three pointer to put the Maroons ahead 45-44.  Roanoke built a six point lead after Andrew Daniels hit back to back three-pointers over the next two minutes.  With 4:06 on the clock Daniel Eacho hit a layup that would give the Maroons a 10-point, 59-49 lead.  Over the next two minutes, Hampden-Sydney went on an 11-0 run to go ahead one, 60-59 with 1:54 to play.  Ramirez hit a layup to reclaim the lead, but the Tigers' Mike Murray hit a layup of his own to get back to a one point Tiger advantage.  In the final seconds of regulation, Ramirez fouled out, and in the process Murray hit two free throws to put Hampden-Sydney ahead by three.  Seth Bradley hurled a three-quarter court pass to Andrew Daniels, who turned and drained a three pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.

In the first overtime period, the two teams traded baskets back and forth and with 2:06 to play, the Maroons and Tigers were tied again at 70-70.  A minute later, Andrew Daniels knocked down two free throws to go ahead 72-70.  The Tigers took an attempt at a three pointer, but missed, then with 11 seconds got fouled, sending Mitch Owens to the line.  Owens hit both free throws, tying the game at 72-72.  John Fitchett sent up a three at the buzzer, but was just off the mark, taking the ODAC contest to a second overtime period.

Roanoke trailed by three after the first minute and a half of the second overtime.  However, Daniels came to the rescue again, hitting a three and tying the game at 76-76 with 3:08 remaining.  Fitchett hit a layup, while Joey Miller added two free throws to give Roanoke a four-point, 80-76 advantage with 20 seconds to play.  Hampden-Sydney's Greg Lewis hit a layup to get within two, but Miller drained two more free throws to secure the Roanoke 82-78 double overtime victory in the Bast Center.

The Tigers were led by Mike Murray, who came off the bench to score 20 points off of 7-11 shooting.  Greg Lewis put up 16 points, including four three pointers.  Leon Hargrove and Jake Duncan each tallied 14 points, with Hargrove shooting 7-12 from the field.  William Scott led the Tigers in rebounding with 10, while Murray led the team in steals with five.

The two teams were even in shooting with Roanoke having a mark of 39.4 percent to Hampden-Sydney's 39.2 percent.  The Maroons outshot the tigers 88.0 to 57.1 percent from the free throw line, as well as 28.6 to 23.5 percent from behind the arc.  Roanoke led in the rebounding category 50-41, also dishing out 19 assists to the Tigers' 11.

Roanoke returns to action on Wednesday February 18th as they play host to Washington and Lee in the final home game of the season for the Maroons.  It will serve as Senior Night for four of the members of the Roanoke squad, so be sure to come out and show your support.  The game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM tip.
