Men's Basketball Falls To Washington and Lee in ODAC Tournament Opening Round
LEXINGTON – The Roanoke College men's basketball team closes the 2014-15 season after falling to Washington and Lee in the opening round of the ODAC Tournament on Monday evening, 74-56.  The Maroons, who were the #10 seed in the tournament finish the season with a record of 10-16, 5-11 in conference play, while the #7 seed Generals advance to the ODAC Quarterfinals with a record of 11-15.
 
2014-15 was a year of milestones for the Roanoke men's basketball team.  Head Coach Page Moir had three very outstanding accomplishments. Prior to the season, Moir was named President of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).  Moir also earned his 400th career win with an 83-61 victory over SUNY-Brockport on November 16th, making him the 34th active coach to reach 400 wins in Division III.  On January 24th, the Maroons defeated Bridgewater College 88-71 to give Moir his 250th Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory. 
 
On the player side, there were also plenty of milestones for the Maroons.  Daniel Eacho finished his career at Roanoke College with 1,311 points, ranking 16th all-time at Roanoke College.  He was one point shy of tying Bruce Hembrick '81 for 15th all-time.  He also finished 8th all-time in rebounding at Roanoke College, pulling down 724 boards over his career.  With 10 rebounds in tonight's game, he passed Beatty Barnes '72 and Charles Small '88. 
 
Andrew Daniels came back from an injury to put up 12 points in tonight's game, giving him 970 career points, which ranks 34th All-Time at Roanoke, passing Beatty Barnes '72 (960).  Daniels hit two three-pointers which moves him to a tie for sixth all-time at Roanoke with Nathan Hungate, with 127 three-pointers made.  Julian Ramirez finishes his career ranked third all-time at Roanoke in assists, dishing out 391 over his time as a Maroon.  He also ranks 8th all-time in career steals, finishing with 156.
 
Eacho led the Maroons on the night with 17 points, shooting 6-16 from the field, while completing a double-double with 10 rebounds.  Daniels was second on the squad with 12 points, adding on two rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Carter Wright finished the game perfect from the floor, going 4-4 on the night, including 2-2 from behind the arc.  He also had three rebounds.
 
The Maroons played Washington and Lee tight in the first half.  Roanoke took an early 4-0 lead off of baskets by Daniels and Cameron Smith.  The Maroons held Washington and Lee scoreless for the first three minutes of the contest until Andy Kleinlein hit a three pointer to get the Generals back within one.  Kleinlein and Andrew Franz hit back to back three pointers to give the Generals a three point, 9-6 advantage over the Maroons at the 16:01 mark.  Starting at 14:51, Daniels went on a 8-2 run of his own, giving the Maroons a three point, 16-13 lead.  The teams traded the lead back and forth over the next couple of minutes, but it was a pair of Clayton Murtha free throws that started an 18-4 run for the Generals, giving W&L a 13-point, 36-23 advantage with 2:26 to play.  Seth Bradley and Joey Miller scored the final three points of the half, as Roanoke trailed by 10, 36-26 entering the locker room.
 
Eacho scored the first eight of Roanoke's 10 points in the first four minutes of the second half, bringing the Maroons back within four points, 40-36.  W&L's Murtha and Kleinlein answered with five points, but Carter Wright scored five unanswered points of his own, even draining a trey, as Roanoke trailed again by four, 45-41 with 13:04 to play.  Later in the half, Wright spouted off another five point run, getting the Maroons within three points, 49-46.  At the 8:18 mark, Eacho hit a jumper with to get the Maroons within two, 50-48.  However, the Generals went on an 8-0 run that built back up to a 10-point W&L advantage with 6:14 left in the contest.  The Maroons would get back within eight points, but the Generals spent the final three minutes on a 12-0 run, leading 74-53 with one minute left.  Roanoke's Bryce Woodliff scored Roanoke's final basket with a three-pointer at the 43 second mark.  But the Maroons season would come to a close with a 74-56 loss to Washington and Lee.
 
The Generals were led by Clayton Murtha, who finished with 27 points, including an 11-11 mark from the free throw line.  Andy Kleinlein finished with 19 points, shooting 6-8 from the field, going 5-6 from behind the arc.  Andrew Franz finished with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, adding on two assists and two steals.  Patrick O'Connor also finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and led the team in assists with five.
 
The Generals outshot the Maroons 45.5 to 36.2 percent from the field, while the Maroons held the advantage in three pointers, hitting 35.7 percent of their attempts to Washington and Lee's 33.3 percent.  The teams were tied on the boards with 36 rebounds apiece, while the Generals led in assist 15-9.
 
Washington and Lee moves on as the #7 seed to face Virginia Wesleyan in the 6:00 PM game of the ODAC Quarterfinals.  That contest, along with the remainder of the 2015 ODAC Tournament will be played at the Salem Civic Center.
