The Lead: Roanoke kicked off the 2022 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Basketball Tournament with a game against Washington and Lee in the quarterfinal round. The Maroons broke open a close game late in the first half and took a 47-39 lead into the half. Roanoke would hold Washington and Lee scoreless for the first five-minutes of the second half on their way to an 82-69 win over the Generals.

How it Happened:

  • Tripp Greene would stake Roanoke to a 5-2 lead and the advantage grew to six after a Kasey Draper triple. However, the Generals will rally to tie and then take the lead, 12-11, with 14:54 left in the first half.
  • The teams would trade the lead over the next four-minutes when a W&L spurt would put them in front 24-18 with just over nine-minutes remaining.
  • Efosa U-Edosomwan scored to start a 12-0 Roanoke College run that would put the Maroons in front to stay, 30-24, with 5:53 left before the break. The lead would grow to 10 on two occasions before Washington and Lee cut it to 44-39 with just seconds to play. Draper got fouled on a 3-point attempt with :03 to play and made all three free throws to take a 47-39 lead into the locker room.
  • Justin Kuthan scored to push the lead to 10 while the Roanoke defense held the Generals scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half.
  • Roanoke would build the lead to 15 but a late Washington and Lee rally would cut their deficit to 75-67 with less than two-minutes to play. The Maroons would make enough free throws to close out the Generals and advance to the semifinals, 82-69.
  • Draper finished with 31 points and 12 rebounds while Kuthan (14) and Greene (12) gave RC a trio of double-digit scorers.

Up next: The Maroons will advance to play the top seeded, and #1 ranked, Yellow Jackets of Randolph Macon in the semifinal round on Saturday. The game is scheduled for 1:00pm at the Salem Civic Center.
