Golf is Second Heading into Final Day of ODAC Championships
CAPE CHARLES, Va. ---The Roanoke College men's golf team shot a combined score of 310 after first round of play in the 2012 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships Monday at Bay Creek Resort. This marks the fifth consecutive year the championship has been contested on the 6,987-yard Palmer Course.

Inclement throughout the state this past weekend has caused the ODAC Golf Championship to be cancelled Sunday. Rain in the Cape Charles, Va.-area forced the postponement of the 1st round and shortening of the tournament to 36 holes. Play resumed on Monday with a full round of 18 holes.

The Maroons, ranked 36th in the country, are only behind #2 Guilford (GCA Coaches' Poll) who shot a 296 as a team. The Quakers, who are the defending ODAC Champions, have won four tournament titles this season heading into the post-season. GC is second in ODAC-history in ODAC Golf Championships with 11. Roanoke, who has finished among the top-40 over the last three years in the national rankings, have placed second only three times in program-history (1982, 87, 98).

Roanoke's scored better than nationally-ranked teams Bridgewater (28) and #24 Hampden-Sydney, which posted scores of 313 (3rd) and 319 (7th), respectively. The Eagles, who are the 2010 ODAC Champions, shot 15-strokes below their average of 303, which is second-best in the ODAC.

Brandon Ketron, ranked #25 in the country as an individual, led Roanoke with a team-low 74, tying 2011 ODAC Golfer of the Year, Noah Ratner, who amassed an impressive 72.1 scoring average this spring. Both posted the fourth-best individual round in the first round of the tournament. Ketron has enjoyed a solid senior campaign, with a pair of top-five showings in the fall and a top-10 finish in the Roanoke Invitational leading up to this weekend.

Patrick Guzi, who was second among Roanoke golfers in last weekend's host invitational, followed Ketron's lead with a 77 scorecard. His first round score was tied for the 10th best individual mark. Freshman Will Retain posted a 78 (13th) while Adam Skaff and Cam McLaughlin rounded out the top-five with an 81 and 84, respectively.

The eight conference teams will begin the final round tomorrow at 9 a.m. with Roanoke being the final team with Guilford to tee off. Heading into the final day of the shortened tournament, there is only a nine-stroke difference between six teams. RC will attempt to win their third ODAC Championship, their first since their second of back-to-back titles in 1980-81.

Following the tournament, the conference will release the All-ODAC golf teams following its presentation at the championship event. For more information, including team lineups and the official scorecard, go to the ODAC's golf championship website at www.odaconline.com/tournament/spring/golf.
