2015 Golf Recap

2015 Golf Recap
The Roanoke College Men's Golf Team had an improved season this year where they won a couple of tournaments and placed two on the All-ODAC Third Team in Andrew Butts and Alex Taylor. Butts was unable to play for the majority of the spring season after he sustained a wrist injury towards the end of fall season. Therefore the Maroons had to make due without their team's lowest shooter.

The fall season went well for the Maroons as they started off the season strong by finishing fifth at the Tom Kinder Memorial (9/13) out of eighteen schools that participated. After the first day, they were in first with a total first round score of 291 (+6), but could not hold the lead after shooting a total team score of 305 in the second round. Andrew Butts finished tied for fifth overall after shooting a 73 (+2) in both rounds.

Roanoke was able to win the Shenandoah invitational (9/20) by a single stroke with a final score of 588 (+28) after shooting a 285 (+5) in the second round. Their second round score was the lowest round for any team in the tournament. The Maroons were able to place three golfers in the top-five for this tournament including Alex Taylor who shot a 146 (+4) and finished tied for second. Andrew Butts and Jack Prater both tied for fourth with a score of 147 (+7). Taylor was named ODAC Golfer of the Week for his impressive performance at Shenandoah and was the first Maroon to earn this honor since Brandon Ketron in 2012.

The week after their victory at Shenandoah, they were able to tie for second at the Virginia State Intercollegiate (9/28) that included 11 teams. William Brown led the team and tied for fourth overall while shooting 74 (+2) and 76 (+4) in each of the two rounds. Andrew Butts continued to stay consistent with his finish and was second on the team with a total score of 155 (+11).

Two weeks later the Maroons faced off in the Ted Keller Invitational where they finished ninth in the two-round tournament by shooting a team score of 623 (+63). Butts led the team for the second time this year while finishing tied for seventh overall with a two-round score of 150 (+10). He then led the team again two weeks later at the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial (10/27) and tied for 12th with a two-round score of 154 (+14). The team finished in 12th also by shooting identical 331 scores in both rounds.

Without Andrew Butts for the spring season the golf team relied on consistent play from Alex Taylor and William Brown. At the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational (3/13) the Maroons placed in 27th in the large field of competitors and Ryan Davis and Alex Taylor shot an identical 224 three-round score (+8).

One of their best tournaments of the year came at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate (3/27) where the Maroons won the scarlet division. After the first round all five golfers competing for Roanoke notched their lowest scores of the season including William Brown (67), Kolton Cooper (70), Alex Taylor (71), Ryan Davis (72) and Jack Prater (78). As a team they finished with a three round score of 893 (+45) to give them their only victory of the spring season.

At the Roanoke College Invitational (4/3) held at Ballyhack Golf Club the Maroons finished in sixth out of thirteen teams that participated. William Brown led the team in scoring for the second straight week by shooting a two round total of 163 (+19). Brown led the team for a third straight week at the Glenn Heath Shipbuilders Memorial (4/13) and Roanoke finished in third for this tournament (619).

Roanoke capped off their 2014-2015 season by finishing eighth at the ODAC Men's Golf Championship (4/20). William Brown led the team for the fourth straight week by shooting identical 76 (+4) rounds to give him a two round total of 152 (+8).

Roanoke golfers, Andrew Butts and Alex Taylor were both named to the 2015 All-ODAC Men's Golf Third Team, announced Monday.  Butts and Taylor are the first Maroons to earn All-ODAC accolades since Brandon Ketron (First Team) and Adam Skaff (Second Team) made the list in the 2012 season.

Butts, a sophomore from Salem, VA, held the team's lowest average for the season, averaging 75.67 over 12 rounds of golf.  He tallied two top five finishes during the season.  He tied for fourth in the Shenandoah University back in September, shooting a two-day total of 147 (+7).  He also tied for fifth in the Tom Kinder Memorial to start the season, going for a 146 (+2).  Butts placed in the top-10 one other time, tying for seventh at the Ted Keller Memorial in October, with a +10, 150.

Taylor, a junior from Roanoke, VA, finished the season shooting an average of 77.63, the second lowest average for the Maroons.  He was named ODAC Player of the Week on September 22nd, after leading the Maroons to the team title at the Shenandoah Invitational.  He tied for second in the event, posting rounds of 75 and 71 for a six over 146.  The 71 in the Shenandoah invitational was his lowest round of the season.  Taylor tied for 20th in the Ted Keller Memorial, shooting a 154 (+14), and was the second lowest shooter behind Andrew Butts.  He also tied for 25th in the Virginia State Intercollegiate, posting at two day 161 (+17).
