The Lead: The 2021-22 golf season got started for the Maroons as they traveled to Harrisonburg to compete at the Kinder-Williams Invitational hosted by Bridgewater College. The two-day event was played at par 72 over the Mountain and Lake courses at Lakeview Golf Club and featured 88 golfers. Roanoke would send two teams to compete in the field of 16 teams. The Roanoke A team posted a 15-over par 591 to finish in a tie for sixth while the Maroons B team finished 30-over 606 to earn an eighth-place finish.

How it Happened:

Roanoke A:

  • Freshman Palmer Cuny shot an opening round 74 and followed it up with a 3-under par round of 69 to pace the Maroons and finish in a tied for 6th overall. Cuny was one of only four golfers to best 70 on the final day of play.
  • Sophomore Will Abdi also got off to a good start with an opening round 74. He then came home at even-par 72 on the second day and found himself in a 12th place tie in the 88-golfer field.
  • Fellow freshman TJ Whelan finished the event at 5-over par with a 75 and 74 on his way to a top 30 result in his first collegiate event.
  • Juniors Will Clary and Justin Grenier rounded out the team scoring for the Maroons. Clary posted a 5-over 76 on the opening day while Grenier recorded a final day 77 to help the Maroons to a team total of 292.

Roanoke B:

  • Roanoke College would send another five-man team to compete in the field of 16. The Roanoke B team would best every other B team in the field (four) as well as four other teams on route to a top half finish.
  • Sophomore Michael Donnelly fired a 2-under par 70 on the opening day and followed it up with a solid round of 76 to finish tied for 12th overall.
  • Junior Daniel Poff shot an opening round 79, but thanks in part to his 1-over par 73, the team improved 12 strokes and posted a score of 297.
  • Another pair of freshmen rounded out the scoring. Davis Wille and Sean Furlong each recorded a 2-over par 74 on Tuesday afternoon.

Up Next: The Maroons will split up and go to two different one-day events on Monday, September 27. One group will head to Western Maryland to play at the Stevenson Invite while another group will head to Winchester to play in the Shenandoah University Glory Days Fall Invitational.
