The Lead: The Roanoke College golf team got the 2022 portion of the schedule started with a trip to Lynchburg to compete at the, two-day, Hill City Invitational. In a field that featured four NCAA DIII nationally ranked teams as well as a NCAA DII competitor, the Maroons moved up two spots during the final and just missed a top-5 effort in the field of 12 teams.

How it Happened:

  • On day one, Roanoke found themselves in eighth place after an opening round 318. Sophomore Michael Donnelly and freshmen TJ Whelan and Palmer Cuny paced the Maroons. Donnelly and Whalen each recorded 6-over par 77's while Cuny added a 79.
  • Day two, freshman Sean Furlong blistered the par-72 layout with a 1-under par 71 to help lead the Roanoke surge passed a pair of teams, including DII Bluefield University. Whalen posted a 1-over par 73 to place him in a tie for 14th in the 64-golfer field. Donnelly (18th overall) carded a 3-over par 75.

Up Next: Roanoke now packs up to head south tomorrow for the Jekyll Island Collegiate. The 30-team, three-day, tournament is one of the most prestigious DIII events on the calendar. Roanoke will tee off in the afternoon on Friday.
