The Lead: The Roanoke golf team wrapped up the season at the 2022 Old dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships at the Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet, Va. The Maroons led for much of the first day before ending the round with a 3-over par 287, just five strokes behind Hampden-Sydney. Day two would consist of 36-holes due to the Sunday forecast. Roanoke shot an even-par 284 and still resided in second place. The final 18-holes would see national ranked Washington and Lee post an 11-under par 273 to pass the Maroons as Roanoke would finish in third place, their highest ODAC finish in over a decade.

How it Happened:

  • Round one: Freshman Sean Furlong fired a 3-under par 68 to pace the, 11-team, 55-player, field. Junior Will Clary carded a 1-over 72 while freshmen TJ Whelan (73) and Palmer Cuny (74) rounded out the scoring for the Maroons.
  • Round two: Furlong stayed hot posting another sub-par round with a 2-under 69. Sophomore Michael Donnelly shot an even-par 71 matched by an even-par round from Whelan. Clary was 2-over at 73 and Roanoke had carded an even par 284 as a team.
  • Round three: Whelan went 2-under with a 69 with Furlong adding a 73. Cuny shot his third consecutive 74 while Donnelly rounded out the scoring with a 78.
  • The Maroons would take a sixth golfer to compete in the field. Junior Daniel Poff posted rounds of 72, 74, and 73. Five teams would bring a sixth player to play together as a group that would not count in the official scoring.
  • Roanoke went into the event as the #6 seed according to the most recent Golfstat rankings.
  • Furlong was fourth overall and earned All-Tournament team honors. Whelan finished ninth, giving Roanoke a pair in the top 10. Cuny finished 23rd and Clary 27th. All five Maroons finished in the top 30.
  • After the tournament the ODAC announced the 2022 All ODAC teams. Fellow freshmen Cuny and Whelan each earned 3rd-team honors. It was the first time Roanoke had an All ODAC golfer since 2017 and the first time they had multiple honorees since 2015.

Up Next: Roanoke will await the final GolfStat rankings to see if they improved from their current position at #91.
