SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke jumped out to a 10-0 first-quarter lead and never trailed in the 27-6 win over Richard Stockton at Kerr Stadium Thursday afternoon. With the win the Maroons improved to 8-0 while the Ospreys dropped to 3-1 on the season.
The Maroons, who tied a season-best 27 goals today, reigns supreme passing the 1978 and 1979 teams for the best start in school-history (8-0). The 83 groundballs were a season-best along with 20 assists, 76 shots and 52 shots on goal.
The first attack line of March, Thomas and Quinton scored a combined 10 goals while the second line of Keating, Hotchkiss and Coretti totaled 11 for the afternoon. Roanoke was successful in 29-of-33 clears and won 24-of-37 face-offs. They also held a convincing 76-28 shot advantage.
After the Maroons jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead, they didn't let up in the second stanza, going into the half with a commanding 17-1 lead. Quinton scored four of his five goals in the first half.
The lead grew to 19, 21-2 midway through the third quarter before calling off the dogs as they put it on cruise control for their eighth-straight win.
Matt Quinton paced the Maroons with a team-best five goals along with one assist. He is now only 11 points shy of becoming the 40th member of the 100-point club at Roanoke. Jeff Keating finished with four goals and two assists while Joseph Coretti had four goals and one assist. Ashton Hotchkiss added three goals and one assist.
Zach Thomas had two goals and two assists to make him only the seventh player in men's lacrosse history to eclipse 200 points. He now has 204 career points and needs only five more to move into sixth all-time. His 123 career goals are now one away from tying Kris Davis '04 for fifth all-time. His 82 career assists are eighth all-time.
Chas Carlson moved into 16th all-time in career points (163) and is one assist shy of 100 for his career. He finished with two assists today while Pat March scored five points (3g, 2a) to move up two spots to 20th all-time in career points (130).
Defensively, Justin Tuma led the team with eight groundballs. Greg Khanzadian paced the Maroons with seven groundballs and 6-of-9 on face-offs. Michael Richardson and Josh Rea collected four groundballs each while Rea winning 7-of-8 face-offs. Hotchkiss and Drew Manley picked up five groundballs apiece.
Jake Dorsey and Nick Peck combined for 15 saves while Richard Stockton's Jeff Doyle and Mike Formichella totaled 25 for the Ospreys.
The men will travel to Radnor, PA to battle #7 Cabrini Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. In what is arguably the biggest game of the regular season, the Maroons are 1-1 against the Cavaliers. They defeated Roanoke, 10-9 at Kerr Stadium in last year's season-opener. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
