Men's Lacrosse: Game Notes vs. Dickinson

The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team will travel to Carlisle, PA to play Dickinson this coming Saturday, March 14. The #5 Maroons are 6-0 on the season, and will be playing the Red Devils at 1:00 pm.
Series Information
The Maroons are 3-1 against the Red Devils since 2000, meeting that year as well as 2004, 2007, and 2008. The team has scored at least 10 goals in all four games, with the largest margin being 24-6 in 2000. Their only loss, in 2007, was by one goal in overtime (11-10). The Maroons defeated the then-#17 Red Devils, 14-8 last season.

The men's lacrosse team got a big win against Dickinson, 14-8 at Donald J. Kerr Stadium. The win propelled the Maroons to 3-2 on the season while the Red Devils dropped their first game of the season (4-1).
The Maroons, who are ranked #11 in the country, won the ground ball battle, 44-35 and outshot Dickinson, 32-27. The Red Devils won 16-of-24 face-offs on the afternoon. The Maroons are now 3-1 all-time against the Red Devils and avenged an overtime loss, 11-10 last season.
With the Maroons down, 4-5 late in the second period, the Maroons scored nine of the next 11 goals to pull away late to win their third game of the season.
The Maroons were led by Chas Carlson with two goals and four assists. He moved into a three-way tie for 21st on the all-time scoring list. He also tied fellow teammate Zach Thomas with 70 career assists which is 10th all-time.
Ashton Hotchkiss finished with three goals and two assists to pace the Maroons. Pat March, Matt Quinton and Billy Cameron added two goals for Roanoke. Cameron led the Maroons with seven groundballs on the afternoon.
Jake Dorsey had 13 saves and six groundballs for Roanoke while Russell Matthews finished with five for Dickinson.

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke College defeated St. Mary's, 16-10 in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons improved to 6-0 while the Seahawks dropped to 1-2.
The Maroons, who are off to their best start since the 1979 season, ended their streak of five-straight 20-goal games which is a school-record. The Men are now 8-1 against the Seahawks, including the last three meetings.
Roanoke held a 57-39 shot advantage, 33-21 in shots on goal. The Maroons won 18-of-28 face-offs, led by Greg Khanzadian (13-of-17) and were successful in 22-of-28 clear attempts.
The Maroons pulled away early, scoring six of the first seven goals of the game. Just two minutes into the second period, Trey Keeley's unassisted goal made it 7-1 with 12:55 remaining the half.
Khanzadian led Roanoke defensively with eight groundballs. Brian Foley had six while Stephen Simmons and Sam Love each finished with five.
Keeley's three goals and one assist paced Roanoke while Matt Quinton had two goals and an assist.
St. Mary's was led by Ryan Alexander with two goals and Dennis Rosson with a goal and three assists.
Jake Dorsey had 15 saves in goal for the Maroons while Pat Simpson finished with 17 saves for the Seahawks.
Scouting the Red Devils
Dickinson College is 3-1 overall so far this season, with their last two games notching wins over Kenyon, 11-10 and Lycoming College, 14-9 this week. Ted Sirvaitis scored seven goals for the Red Devils, while goalie Russell Matthews made 27 saves over the last two games.
About the Maroons
The Maroons are off to a 6-0 start, their best start since the 1979 season which eventually went 9-3 and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. The team is ranked 5th on both the laxpower.com and USILA Coaches poll for the week of March 9. In their latest 16-10 win over St. Mary's, nine individuals tallied goals, while eight had at least one assist.
Matt Quinton leads the Maroons offensively with 20 goals and 27 points in addition to 47 shots, 32 on goal with four game-winners. Zach Thomas has 20 points with 11 goals and nine assists while collecting 18 groundballs on the season. Chas Carlson leads Roanoke with 11 assists in addition to 16 groundballs.
Defensively, Jake Dorsey has 68 saves in goal for the Maroons with a .624 save percentage. He also has an 8.45 goals against average. Justin Tuma has 35 groundballs to lead the team along with 37-of-56 in face-offs. Greg Khanzadian is second on the team 34 groundballs but leads the team with winning 61-of-87 face-offs this spring. Sam Love adds 32 groundballs to help lead the defense.
Coach Pilat
Coach Bill Pilat enters his 21st on the Roanoke College sidelines where he has accumulated over 55-percent of the men's lacrosse program wins. Pilat is the winningest coach in school history with over 200 victories and a win percentage of .663 for his career. He has accumulated 11 of the school's 19 NCAA Tournament appearances as a player (1982, 83, 85), an assistant (1988), and as head coach (1992, 96, 97, 98, 05, 06, 07). He has also totaled 12 of the school's 15 ODAC Championships as a player (1982-85), an assistant (1988) and head coach (1990, 1992, 1995-97, 2006-07).
Pilat became only the 13th coach in NCAA Division III to win 200 games against York (Pa.) in the season-opener Feb. 21. He is ranked among the top-20 all-time in NCAA Div. III in career wins and win percentage. A 1985 graduate of Roanoke, Pilat is currently seventh among active coaches in career wins and 15th in win percentage. The longtime coach reigns among the best in ODAC History, ranked second in career wins and first in win percentage. A three-time VaSID State Coach of the Year (2005-07), Pilat is ranked second in the state of Virginia in wins and first in win percentage as well (college division).
Record Watch
Zach Thomas is currently ninth on the all-time career points list with 193 points. He needs only four more to move into seventh, passing former National Player of the Year Chris Keating '06, who had 196 career points. His 117 career goals passed both Jeff Jones '97 and Kin Nevitt '77 for eighth on the all-time list. He needs four more to move into sixth, passing George Parks '78 who had 120 career goals. His 76 career assists is three shy of passing Dan Reed '05 for eighth all-time. His 181 career shots on goal are two shy of passing Andy Bonasera '03 for second all-time.
Chas Carlson's 158 career points are three shy of passing JJ Blatt '95 for 16th all-time. He is also three assists shy of becoming only the fifth player at Roanoke to eclipse over 100 assists. His 134 shots on goal passed Will Goldthwait '90 for fifth all-time.
Pat March has 124 career points, which ties Bill Doxanas '72 for 22nd all-time and needs three more to move past Braxton Andrews '73 for 21st on the list. He is currently sixth on the career shots on goal list with 131.

With a win over Dickinson on Saturday, the Maroons will tie the 1978 & 79 teams with the best start in school-history (7-0). With history on their side, when the Maroons have started 7-0 the past two times, they have advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals or have won a National Championship.
