Men's Lacrosse Game Notes vs. Lynchburg

#2 Roanoke will travel to Lynchburg, Va. to take on #14 Lynchburg in a classic ODAC-battle this evening. The Maroons are undefeated with a 13-0 mark, 3-0 in the ODAC while the Hornets are 8-3, 2-0 in conference play.
Series Information vs. Lynchburg
Roanoke is 28-6 all-time against the Hornets since 1980 when the Maroons entered ODAC-play as a provisional Div. III member. Since 2001, the series has been nearly even with Roanoke holding the slight edge, 7-6. Since 2000, the meetings have been tight, with three overtime games and nine decided by three goals or less. Since 1992, the Maroons have scored only three 20-goal games in the series.
Last Time Out (20-3 W at Guilford)
GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Zach Thomas had four goals and an assist in visiting Roanoke College's 20-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse victory at Guilford College Wednesday afternoon. The Maroons (13-0, 3-0 ODAC) are ranked second in this week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division III Poll.
The Maroons, ranked #2 in this week's USILA Div. III Top-20 poll, are now 26-2 against the Quakers and have scored 20 or more goals in the last three meetings, outscoring Guilford, 65-9. The eight 20-goal games are tied with the 1992 and 1993 squads for the school-record while the 13 wins are two shy of tying the single-season mark at Roanoke.
Roanoke outshot Guilford, 74-23, and scooped up 56 ground balls to the Quakers' 41. The Maroons were successful in 23-of-27 clear attempts.
After Guilford's Chris Ashcraft opened the scoring 1:48 into the contest, Roanoke reeled off the next 19 goals and held the Quakers (3-7, 1-3 ODAC) scoreless until the fourth quarter. Thomas scored all four of his goals in the first half, which helped the Maroons take an 11-1 halftime lead.
10 different Maroons netted goals in the game, including six with multiple scores. Joseph Coretti and Jeff Keating both scored three goals. Steve Furdock added two goals and two assists.
Greg Khanzadian won eight of nine face-offs and scooped up a game-high seven ground balls Josh Rea won six-of-seven face-offs and picked up six ground balls. The Maroons won 21-of-27 face-offs.
Guilford was led by Ashcraft's two goals. Ryan Walsh and Mark Guillen combined for 21 saves in goal. Walsh also had six ground balls.
Jake Dorsey got his 30th career win in goal for the Maroons, picking up two saves. Nick Peck came in to play the final three periods to rack up a season-best eight saves.
Last Meeting (L, 10-18 April 19, 2008)
SALEM, Va. --- The men's lacrosse team dropped an 18-10 decision to Lynchburg on Saturday evening. The loss dropped the Maroons to 8-6 on the year and finished 2-4 in ODAC play. The Hornets improved to 12-2, 5-0 in the ODAC.
The stands were packed for the event during alumni weekend, with nearly 2,000 in attendance. At halftime, the school honored the 1978 National Championship Men's Lacrosse team, celebrating the 30-year anniversary of the team's accomplishment.
The Maroons outshot the Hornets, 47-46 and won the groundball battle, 46-31. Roanoke won 19-of-30 face-offs and were successful in 19-of-23 clear attempts.
Lynchburg scored three of the first four goals and never looked back as they built a 9-6 lead at the half.
The Hornets came out the gate in the second half and scored the first five goals to increase their lead to 14-6.
Billy Cameron led the late third quarter surge as he scored two of the next three Maroon goals to cut their deficit to 14-9 with 3:12 remaining in the third.
Lynchburg foiled any chance of a Roanoke comeback as the Hornets scored four of the final five goals to seal their ODAC-leading fifth victory.
Billy Cameron led the Maroons with three goals, one assist, won 10-of-17 face-offs and collected 10 groundballs. He has 421 groundballs, just seven shy of tying the school-record.
Ashton Hotchkiss finished with three goals and six groundballs followed by Stephen Simmons with two in addition to six groundballs. Trey Keeley had one goal and one assist for the Maroons.
Stephen Weis and Michael Mundorf each finished with five goals and an assist to lead the Hornets.
Jake Dorsey had nine saves for Roanoke. Garrett Curran finished with 19 for Lynchburg.
Roanoke Remained #2 in USILA Top-20 Poll
Roanoke men's lacrosse remained at the #2 spot in the USILA Top-20 Poll announced Monday afternoon. The men have been ranked in the top-10 all season and have been ranked second for the last two weeks.
Also in the poll is ODAC members Washington & Lee (#6) and Lynchburg (#14), which is the next two opponents on the schedule after Guilford on Wednesday. Cabrini, which the Maroons defeated on the road March 21, 16-13, moved up two spots to #15 while Williams received votes in the poll. The men defeated the Ephs, 17-16 in a thrilling come-from-behind overtime win.
Roanoke (12-0, 2-0 ODAC) is off to its best start in school-history in addition to its record-breaking 10-0 non-conference mark. The five-straight 20-goal games at the start of the season were the longest streak for the storied 42-year program and have totaled seven for the season. The men need one more 20-goal game to tie the 1992 and 1993 teams for the most in a season.
March named ODAC Player of the Week
Junior attack Pat March was named the men's lacrosse ODAC Player of the Week announced this afternoon. The Glen Burnie, MD native was chosen for the weekly honor for the second time in his career, almost a year to the day from his last one on March 31, 2008. He is the third Maroon to earn the weekly honor this spring.
The 2007 ODAC Rookie of the Year and a two-time All-ODAC selection, March scored nine goals and added four assists for 13 points in two games last week. In the overtime win over Williams, he scored a team-best five goals along with two assists. His goal with 2:42 remaining tied the game and setup of the game's final minutes. In the road ODAC-opening win at Randolph-Macon, the Mt. St. Joseph product scored four goals and added two assists in the 13-9 win over the Yellow Jackets.
March is currently second on the team in goals (28), assists (12), points (40), shots (63) and shots on goal (44). His 145 career points rank him 18th on the all-time scoring list while his 154 shots on goal are currently fifth all-time at Roanoke. He is only six goals shy of 100 for his career.

Roanoke is ranked second for the second-straight week with an undefeated mark of 13-0, 3-0 in the ODAC. The Maroons have accomplished many new records this season, which included a 10-0 non-conference record, eight 20-goal games, a 13-0 start and back-to-back earned #2 rankings by the USILA.
Matt Quinton leads the Maroons with 40 goals, 51 points, 91 shots, 66 shots on goal and eight man-up goals. Chas Carlson has 21 assists, Greg Khanzadian with 114 won face-offs and Justin Tuma's 89 groundballs leads the team.

Zach Thomas is ranked all-time at Roanoke in points (216/fifth), goals (130/fifth), assists (85/eighth), shots (373/T-5th) and shots on goal (203/second). Pat March is ranked all-time in points (154/T-18th), goals (98/12th), shots on goal (162/fifth). Matt Quinton is the latest member of the 100-point club and is now tied for 37th on that list with 101 points. Chas Carlson is currently ranked in career points (175/13th), assists (106/fourth) and shots on goal (143/sixth).
