Men's Lacrosse Game Notes vs. Hampden-Sydney

The men lacrosse team will battle ODAC-rival Hampden-Sydney in ODAC Action Saturday, April 3 at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons and Tigers will square off at 2 p.m.

The Maroons hold a 24-11 series advantage over the Tigers. HSC scored with .7 seconds left in regulation and went on to win in overtime, 13-12 at Hampden-Sydney. Prior to last season, Roanoke has won the last five meetings.
Last Time Out
ASHLAND, Va. --- Roanoke held off a fourth-quarter rally from Randolph-Macon to win, 13-9 in its ODAC-opener on the road Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 11-0, 1-0 in the ODAC this season while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 4-3, 0-1 in the conference.
The Maroons, who are 111-27 all-time in ODAC play since 1981, now hold a 34-4 series lead against the Yellow Jackets. The last defeat for Roanoke in the series came in 1972 and has won the last 33-straight.
Roanoke, ranked third in this week's USILA Top-20 poll, outshot R-MC, 51-27 and won the groundball war, 63-47. The Maroons won 14-of-23 face-offs and were 22-of-24 on clear attempts. They were also 4-of-8 on extra-man opportunities.
Seven of the eight first-half goals were scored by the Maroons and took control of the game early. Three of the seven goals during that span came off man-up opportunities, two of those by Ashton Hotchkiss.
Roger Wilson scored his third goal of the season off an assist from Matt Quinton to make it, 7-0. Tyler Midwinter scored for the Yellow Jackets to make it, 7-1 at the half.
Rowe and Kevin Patton scored the only goals of the third quarter to cut the Roanoke lead to 10-6. Then Patrick Egan and Midwinter collected the first two strikes of the final quarter to pull R-MC within in two at 10-8 with 11:13 to play.
A Pat March score with 9:16 to go gave RC an 11-8 advantage, before Brian Rowe scored a man-up goal with 3:53 left, making the game 11-9 in favor of RC.
That would be as close as the Jackets would get as March and Noah Gibby each scored goals in the final twenty two seconds of the contest and RC goalie Jake Dorsey made some key saves down the stretch to seal the game for Maroons.
Roanoke was led by March with four goals and one assist while Trey Keeley led the team with three assists. Hotchkiss had two goals and an assist and Jeff Keating totaled two assists.
Greg Khanzadian won 9-of-11 face-offs and collected nine groundballs on the day. Sam Love collected six groundballs and Stephen Simmons scored a goal and collected seven groundballs in the win.
Quinton finished with one assist and needs one points to become the 40th member of the 100-point club at Roanoke. He needs one more shot on goal to become 10th on the career shots on goal list. Dorsey finished with 11 saves on the afternoon and needs three more to have 400 for his career.
Midwinter finished the game with four goals to lead R-MC, while Adam Liberto made 15 stops in the cage for the Jackets.
Last Meeting
Farmville, Va. --- The men's lacrosse team fell to Hampden-Sydney, 13-12 in overtime on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons dropped to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in the ODAC. The Tigers improved to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the ODAC.
The Tigers broke a five-game skid against the Maroons and are now 10-24 vs. Roanoke. The 13 goals by the Tigers are the most vs. Roanoke since 1996 (16). Each of the last three meetings has been decided by three points or less. The Maroons are 12-13 all-time in overtime games.
Roanoke held slight advantages in both shots (41-35) and ground balls (48-45), while dominating the face-off statistic, winning 21-of-28 chances. The Tigers benefited from great execution on power plays, succeeding on 3-of-4 man-up opportunities.
The Tigers sprinted out to a quick 2-0 lead, only to see the Maroons run off four unanswered strikes to take a 4-2 lead with 8:05 remaining in the first half.
After the Tigers' Andrew O'Shea and Roanoke's Ashton Hotchkiss traded goals to bring the score to 5-3 in favor of the Maroons, Hampden-Sydney scored three consecutive goals to close the first half with a 6-5 advantage.
The Tigers continued to apply pressure, extending their lead to 8-5 with 10:15 to play in the third period, but the Maroons clawed back yet again, this time notching three straight goals to tie the game at eight under two minutes later. Each squad found the net once more in the frame to send the game into the final period knotted at 9-9.
In the fourth period, the Tigers' Kenny Mathison found the back of the net with 12:51 to play to hand Hampden-Sydney a 10-9 lead. The Maroons again responded, going on a 3-0 run over the next eight minutes, taking a 12-10 advantage on Adam Ariosa's goal with 4:48 to play.
The Tigers scored the final two goals in regulation, including a goal with :01 left to force overtime. The Maroons had an opportunity to score in the extra period, but was saved. The Tigers then marched down the other end of the field and scored on the ensuing shot to win their second ODAC game of the season.
11 different players scored for Roanoke, led by Hotchkiss with two on the afternoon. Pat March finished with one goal and two assists to lead the Maroons. Josh Rea had five groundballs and won 12-of-14 face-offs the Maroons.
Billy Cameron had a goal, six groundballs and won 9-of-14 face-offs in defeat. He now needs 22 more groundballs to tie the school-record for GB's in a career at Roanoke. Jake Dorsey finished with 10 saves.
Dunn turned in a solid performance for the Tigers, tallying three goals, one assist, and six ground balls, while Carpenter continued his stellar play with five more points, courtesy of two goals and three assists. Mahoney recorded three helpers and Hage picked up a game-high 11 ground balls to go along with 13 saves.
Maroons Milestones this Season
Roanoke has achieved several win milestones this season. The 11-0 start is the best in school-history, passing the 1978 and 1979 teams (7-0) in which both landed an NCAA Tournament berth. The 1978 team went on to win the national championship. The 10-0 unbeaten mark in non-conference play was the first time in the 40-year history of the lacrosse program that the Maroons held the unbeaten mark. With a win over York in the season-opener, Bill Pilat became only the 13th coach in NCAA Div. III history to eclipse 200 wins. He is the second winningest coach in ODAC history. The five-straight 20-goal games to start the season was the most-consecutive in school-history.
Maroons Ranked #2 in the Latest USILA Poll
Roanoke was ranked second in the nation by the USILA announced this week. It was the highest ranking for the program since the 1992 season which ended in a National Runner-Up finish. It is the highest ranking since the end of the 1978 National Championship season.
March named ODAC Player of the Week
Junior attack Pat March was named ODAC Player of the Week announced Monday afternoon. It is the third Maroon to garner the weekly honor and March's second of his career. March is currently second on the team in goals (28), assists (12), points (40), shots (63) and shots on goal (44).
The 2007 ODAC Rookie of the Year and a two-time All-ODAC selection, March scored nine goals and added four assists for 13 points in two games last week. In the overtime win over Williams, he scored a team-best five goals along with two assists. His goal with 2:42 remaining tied the game and setup of the game's final minutes. In the road ODAC-opening win at Randolph-Macon, the Mt. St. Joseph product scored four goals and added two assists in the 13-9 win over the Yellow Jackets.
