Six Players Named to VaSID Men's Lacrosse All-State Team; Pilat Named VaSID Coach of the Year
ASHLAND, Va. --- Roanoke College led all teams with six players on the 2009 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Men's Lacrosse (College Division) All-State Team announced Wednesday evening. In addition, head coach Bill Pilat was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career. Zach Thomas, Chas Carlson, Stephen Simmons and Sam Love were all named first-team while Pat March and Jake Dorsey were tabbed with second-team honors.
Pilat, who just completed his 21st season at Roanoke, was named coach of the year in 2005-07 prior to this season. In the season-opener vs. York (Pa.) on Feb. 21, he became only the 13th coach in NCAA Div. III history to win 200 games. The school's all-time winningest coach is also
Thomas, the winningest player in men's lacrosse history with 62 career wins, has made the USILA Div. III All-American Team for the second time in his career. The only captain of the team, he finished his career ranked among the all-time greats at Roanoke in scoring (4th), goals (5th), assists (T-6th), shots (2nd) and shots on goal (2nd). For the season, Thomas has 34 goals and a team-high 25 assists for 59 points. He was a three-time All-ODAC selection. The three-time all-state player was named the 2009 Roanoke College Male Athlete of the Year.
Carlson, named all-state for the third-straight season, earned his third-straight All-American selection after putting up 21 goals and 26 assists for 47 points this season. For his career, he is ranked 11th in career scoring (192), fourth in career assists (111) and sixth in career shots on goal (166). The Cockeysville, MD native is a three-time All-ODAC selection at midfielder. In his final collegiate game, Carlson had three goals and two assists to lead the Maroons in a 14-7 loss to #14 Denison (OH) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Simmons, named all-state for the second-straight season, earned his first All-American honor after a stellar season at Long-Stick Midfielder. For the season, he has totaled four goals and three assists for seven points on the season while collecting 97 groundballs. The junior was named First-Team All-ODAC selection after being named honorable mention last season.
Love earned his first All-American honor to add to his first All-ODAC accolade this season. After playing only three games last season due to an illness, the junior led the defense with 91 groundballs while starting in all 19 games played. In the ODAC Championship vs. #10 Washington & Lee, he caused a career-high nine turnovers in the overtime loss.
March, a three-time All-ODAC and two-time all-state selection, earned his first All-American honor this spring. He is tied for first in scoring (68 pts), assists (26) and man-down goals with (3) while second in goals (42), shots (107) and shots on goal (72) this season. The junior enters next season ranked among the all-time greats in scoring (14th), goals (11th) and shots on goal (3rd). He was named ODAC Player of the Week on March 30.
Dorsey, a junior from Maryland, earned his first all-state and All-ODAC honor in his career. He totaled 58 groundballs with 184 saves, which is 15 shy of ranking himself 10th for single-season saves. He is tied with Bill Pilat '85 for second in career wins (35) and ninth in career saves (467).
The Maroons finished 17-2, 6-0 in the ODAC and claimed the regular season conference championship. The 17 overall wins, 17-game winning streak and the 17-0 start were all ODAC records in addition to breaking the team points (585), goals (357) and assists (228) record. It was the fourth 15-plus win season in five years. The men were ranked in the USILA top-10 all spring which highlighted three-straight weeks atop the national poll.
