SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke defeated Virginia Wesleyan, 27-8 in yet another historic win at Kerr Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Marlins dropped to 3-12, 0-5 in the ODAC while the Maroons are now 16-0, and finished with a 6-0 mark in the ODAC.
It was the 15th time that the Maroons finished undefeated in conference play. In addition, the Maroons also broke school records in single-season wins (16), points (527), goals (319), assists (208) and 20-gpal games (9).
Roanoke held a 73-25 edge in shots and won the groundball battle, 59-13. The Maroons were successful in 21-of-22 clear attempts and 2-of-3 in extra man opportunities. They caused 27 Marlin turnovers led by Sam Love and Adam Ariosa with five. The 28 face-offs won by Roanoke this afternoon is seven shy of breaking the school-record.
The Maroons scored the first seven goals of the game before the Marlins answered as the first quarter ended with an 8-1 Roanoke advantage.
Roanoke reeled 10 unanswered goals in the second stanza as they went into the half with an 18-1 lead and never looked back in securing a #1 seed in the ODAC Tournament.
Zach Thomas led Roanoke with four goals and four assists. He is now one point shy of tying Kris Davis '04 for fourth on the all-time scoring list with 228 career points. He is also seventh all-time in career assists with 91.
Pat March had two goals and three assists in the win which moves him to into 15th all-time in career points with 168. He also moved into fourth on the career shots on goal list with 172.
Chas Carlson netted three goals along with an assist while Matt Quinton had three goals to put him tied for 28th in career points with 111. Ben Sultze had a season-best three goals with an assist in the win.
The Marlins were led by Drew Langis and Adam Nycz with two goals and two assists. Gabe Brumett added a goal and an assist. Mike Tibbs collected four groundballs .
John-Paul Novak finished with 20 saves in goal for Virginia Wesleyan while Jake Dorsey had four saves in earning his 34th career win for Roanoke. He is one save shy of ninth all-time and one win shy of second in career wins at Roanoke. Nick Peck added five saves between the pipes for the Maroons.
The men receive a first-round bye and will await their opponent in the ODAC Semifinals on Wednesday, April 29 at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons have claimed 15 ODAC Championships, more than any other school in the conference.
