#2 Roanoke's Surges past #14 Lynchburg, 19-12

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The second-ranked Roanoke College men's lacrosse team controlled the second half of play Saturday night en route to a 19-12 victory over #14 Lynchburg. The Maroons tied a school-record with 14-straight wins with the 2006 team. Roanoke is now 14-0 with a 4-0 mark in conference play. The Hornets dropped to 8-4, 2-1 in the ODAC.
The Maroons ruined the senior night for 10 Hornets players by dominating the second half of play. For the game, the Maroons held a 56-32 shots advantage, won the groundball battle, 63-36, were successful in 13-of-14 clear attempts and won 25-of-33 face-offs.
Roanoke was one goal shy of breaking the school-record for most 20-goal games in a season. They are tied with the 1992 and 1993 teams with eight. The 19 goals are the most scored since 2006 while the seven-goal win was the largest since 2004.
Roanoke jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and look to cruise to another ODAC victory with 6:17 remaining in the first quarter.
Lynchburg, ranked #14 in this week's USILA poll, reeled off seven of the next nine goals including the one to open the second half to take an 8-6 lead and looked to change the swing of the game.
But the Maroons responded hard with scoring seven-straight goals to regain the lead for good, 13-8 with heading into the final period. They continued to take control of the game, scoring five-straight goals in the next 10 minutes of play to take a commanding 18-9 lead with 5:41 left to play.
Pat March led Roanoke with three goals and four assists while Matt Quinton had four goals and one assist. Chas Carlson added three goals and Trey Keeley chipping in two goals and two assists.
March moved up to 17th on the all-time scoring list at Roanoke (161 pts) and scored over 100 career goals (101). Carlsons' 178 career points now puts him at 12th all-time. Quinton moved up five spots to 33rd on the all-time in career scoring with 106 points.
Greg Khanzadian was unstoppable tonight, leading the Maroons with career-bests of 13 groundballs and winning 18-of-23 face-offs, including his third goal of the season. Alex Burkhead collected seven groundballs while Zach Thomas scored a goal, added an assist and collected six groundballs.
Lynchburg was led by Eddie Bilinkas and Tyler Tolson as both finished with four goals for Lynchburg, and Dylan Hoff added two goals and an assist. Ethan Farrell posted a goal and two assists while Michael Mundorf had two helpers.
Jake Dorsey had 13 saves in goal for the Maroons, earning his 32nd career win, tying Steve Mason '91 for fourth all-time. Franc Cook took the loss in goal for the Hornets with 13 saves of his own.
The men will host #6 Washington & Lee in ODAC action with what could be a preview of the ODAC Championship May 3. The Maroons are 17-27 all-time against the Generals but have won four of the last six meetings. Roanoke will look to avenge an 11-10 loss in Lexington last season. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.
