Maroons Pull Away from Williams in 9-5 Win
SALEM, Va. --- #7 Roanoke defeated Williams, 9-5 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons are now 8-1 on the season while the Ephs dropped to 3-1.
The Maroons are now 2-0 against the Ephs, which received votes in the USILA Top-20 poll this week. The Maroons defense has held their last three opponents to 10 goals or less.
In a tightly contested game statistically, Roanoke held slight edges in shots (43-41) and groundballs, 39-37. The Maroons were 19-of-27 in clears and 2-for-5 in man-up opportunities.
Up only a goal at the half, Roanoke scored three of the four third quarter goals to go up, 5-2 heading into the final period.
Pat March (Glen Burnie, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)scored the first two goals in the fourth to increase the Maroons lead to 7-2 with 11:32 remaining. After an Ephs goal, Roanoke's Mike Hayden (Vienna, VA, James Madison HS)and March scored back-to-back goals to make it, 9-3 at the 8:58 mark.
Williams' Matt Cranshaw and Mike Ryan scored the final two goals of the contest to close to within four, but the Maroons controlled possession the remainder of the contest to seal their eighth win of the season.
March had a game-high three goals with a season-best five groundballs for Roanoke. Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ, Chatham)dished out game-best three assists, as Hayden totaled a goal and two assists. Trey Keeley (Lancaster, PA, Conestaga Valley High School), Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser)and Matt Quinton (Elora, Ontario, Canada, Kitchener Braves)each had a goal and an assist. Alex Burkhead (Winston-Salem, NC, Forsyth Country Day)collected four groundballs.
Ryan scored two goals to lead Williams. Cranshaw and Tommy Murray each totaled a goal and an assist while Richard Reuter assisted the final goal of the afternoon. Face-off specialist Corey Jacobs won 11-of-17 face-offs with seven groundballs. Adam Benjamin also collected seven groundballs on the day.
Jake Dorsey (Woodbine, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)had 15 saves in addition to five groundballs for the Maroons in his 43rd career win. Stephen Vrla finished with 15 saves for the Ephs.
The men will travel to Baltimore, MD to take on #2 Stevenson in a top-10 matchup. It will be the first meeting against the Mustangs. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
