Big Second Half Lifts #2 Stevenson past #7 Roanoke

STEVENSON, Md. --- Stevenson scored nine of the final 11 goals of the second half in an 18-9 victory over Roanoke on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs, ranked second in the USILA Top-20 Poll, improved to 9-0 on the season while the Maroons, who are ranked seventh in the same rankings, dropped to 8-2.

The stage was set for a top-10 showdown, as both teams were eager to take the field. It was a physical contest, as a total of 16 penalties were called. Coming into today's game, the Maroons won the only meeting back in 2001, 10-7.

Roanoke was 15-of-17 in clear attempts and put up 36 shots to Stevenson's 38, but managed only 17 shots on goal and 0-for-9 in man-up opportunities. The Maroons won only 11-of-31 face-offs and lost the groundball battle, 37-26.

Roanoke got on the board in the first minute as ODAC Player of the Week selection Pat March (Glen Burnie, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)scored his 24th goal of the season off a feed from Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ, Chatham)to take the early lead.

Then Stevenson, which won its 26th consecutive regular season game, reeled off seven-straight goals and took a 7-1 lead heading into the second period.

Trey Keeley (Lancaster, PA, Conestaga Valley High School)and Ashton Hotchkiss (Darien, CT, Darien)fueled a run in the second which highlighted four unanswered goals to close to within two, 7-5 with 6:42 left before the half. Both Keeley and Hotchkiss had a goal and an assist during that sequence.

The Mustangs scored two goals before Keeley hooked up with Keating for his 11th goal of the season to make it, 9-6 at the half.

March scored his second goal of the game at the beginning of the third period to close to within two with 12:21 remaining.

But the Mustangs proved to be too much for the Maroons, scoring nine of the final 11 goals to earn their first win over Roanoke.

Hotchkiss scored two goals and added an assist for the Maroons. Keeley had a goal and two assists. Keating and Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser)had a goal and an assist each. Stephen Simmons (West Friendship, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)and Alex Burkhead (Winston-Salem, NC, Forsyth Country Day)collected four groundballs apiece.

Kyle Moffitt had a career-high six goals to lead the Mustangs. Richie Ford scored four goals along with an assist to set the new career goals record at Stevenson. Jimmy Dailey added two goals and a game-high three assists.

Ray Witte won 19-of-29 face-offs and collected 11 groundballs while Tyler Maguire had five groundballs in the win.

Jake Dorsey (Woodbine, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)had 10 saves in goal for the Maroons. Andrew Harrington finished with eight stops for the Mustangs.

The men return to action this Wednesday, March 31 as they host ODAC-rival #14 Lynchburg. The Maroons are 29-6 all-time against the Hornets, including six of the last seven meetings. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.
