Roanoke Tops Washington and Lee, 10-8
LEXINGTON, Va. --- The Maroons defeated #16 Washington and Lee, 10-8 on Wednesday night at Wilson field in ODAC action. Roanoke, ranked #7 in the USILA rankings, improved to 11-2 overall, 5-0 in the ODAC. The Generals fell to 9-4, 3-2 in conference play.
Roanoke , now 19-27 all-time against the Generals, have split the last six meetings. The game was played in front of a charged crowd, which included a large number of Roanoke fans who made the trip.
Now, 11-1 when leading after three quarters, Roanoke was outshot for only the second time this season, 37-31. They won the groundball battle, 37-32, and were 18-for-20 on clears.
Roanoke had seven different goal scorers and assists from five Maroons, led by Drew Manley with two. Ashton Hotchkiss (Darien, CT, Darien)and Richard Lachlan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary)led the Maroons with two goals and an assist each. Richard Lachlan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary)and Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ, Chatham)scored two goals, followed by Trey Keeley (Lancaster, PA, Conestaga Valley High School)with a goal and an assist.
Sam Love (Berwyn Heights, MD, Dematha)and Brayden Gerrie (Fergus, ONT, Western Reserve)were dominant defensively tonight. Love finished with five groundballs and four caused turnovers while Gerrie had two caused turnovers with a career-best four groundballs. Manley and Brian Foley (Charlotte, NC, Myers Park)added three groundballs each.
The Generals were led by Will Keigler, who scored two goals and added two assists. Max Mancuso and Kevin Freeney each scored two goals for Washington and Lee.
Roanoke opened the scoring at 13:07 of the first quarter as Hotchkiss scored his 15th goal of the season. Washington and Lee answered back when Feeney won the face-off ahead and took it all the way down to tie the game at one. The rest of the first half went back-and-forth as the score was tied heading into halftime.
Tied at 5-5 after the half, WLU's Kevin Freeney opened the scoring in the second half less than two minutes in to give the Generals a one-goal advantage. Roanoke responded with four-straight to give the Maroons a 9-6 lead after three quarters of play.
Washington and Lee outscored Roanoke, 3-1 in the fourth quarter, with the Maroons' lone goal coming from Keeley, his 18th of the season with 6:42 left to give the Maroons a 10-7 lead and held on to escape with a big road win.
Jake Dorsey (Woodbine, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)got the win for Roanoke as he finished with nine saves along with six groundballs. Matt Mason got the loss for the Generals, making 11 saves in goal.
The Maroons travel to Darien, CT this weekend where they will face Endicott (RV) on Sunday at 1:00.
