Men's Lacrosse Cruises Past Guilford, 31-3
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke scored a season-high in goals in a 31-3 victory over Guilford at Kerr Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 13-2 overall, 6-0 in the ODAC. The Quakers dropped to 2-12, 0-5 in conference play.
The 31 goals put up by the Maroons is a series-best against the Quakers, also the most since the 1993 season. The 27 wins against Guilford is the third-most against any Roanoke opponent, behind Lynchburg (29) and Randolph-Macon (33).
Roanoke, which won its fifth-straight game, clinched its 17th ODAC Regular Season Championship, more than any other school. The 13 wins this season are the fifth-most in program-history. Since the start of last season, the Maroons are 30-4. Only Cortland (31-3), Salisbury (30-3) and Stevenson (29-2) have better two-year marks.
The Maroons posted season-bests in goals, assists (25), points (56), shots on goal (48) and groundballs with 84. They outshot Guilford, 68-17, won 22-of-35 face-offs and were 4-for-5 in man-up opportunities. Roanoke was 26-of-28 in clear attempts.
Richard Lachlan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary)led all scorers with five goals, in addition to one assist for six points. He collected a season-best four groundballs. Reid Mayberry (Annandale, VA, W.T. Woodson)posted a career-best six points with four goals and two assists. Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ, Chatham)led Roanoke with a game-high seven points and a career-high six assists with one goal. His assist total was sixth on the all-time single-game list at Roanoke.
Tyler Cockey (Woodbine, MD, Century)finished with three goals and two assists along with a season-high five groundballs. Brock Martinez (Wooster, OH, Wooster)had two goals and two assists for his first collegiate points. Matt Quinton (Elora, Ontario, Canada, Kitchener Braves)and Noah Gibby (Terrace Park, OH, Mariemont)netted three goals apiece while Steve Furdock (Birmingham, MI, Birmingham Seaholm)and Brayden Gerrie (Fergus, ONT, Western Reserve)added two goals and one assist. Gerrie had a career-high nine groundballs. Conner DuBois (Lititz, PA, Manheim Township), Ashton Hotchkiss (Darien, CT, Darien)and Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser)each totaled a goal and two assists. Tuma collected nine groundballs and won 9-of-11 face-offs.
Greg Khanzadian (Syracuse, NY, Christian Brothers)won 10-of-13 face-offs while scooping up six groundballs. Stephen Simmons (West Friendship, MD, Mt. St. Joseph), Sam Love (Berwyn Heights, MD, Dematha)and Mike Hayden (Vienna, VA, James Madison HS)collected five groundballs each. Jake Dorsey (Woodbine, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)earned the win in goal for the Maroons. His 606 career saves passed Matt Madalon (Darien, Ct, Darien HS)'06 for fourth on the all-time list. Kyle Hagens (Chatham, NJ, Chatham)had two saves for Roanoke.
Chris Ashcraft had a goal and an assist for Guilford. Daniel Dowd and Kyle Boyden provided the other two goals for the Quakers. Mark Guillen, Charlie Robinson and Tyler Zivic each finished with four groundballs. Guillen stopped 17 shots in goal.
The men will host Randolph-Macon in its regular season home finale on Saturday, April 17 during Alumni Weekend. It will be “Senior Day” for 13 Roanoke seniors prior to the start of the contest. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. following the women's lacrosse game scheduled for noon.
