Roanoke Fifth in USILA Top-20 Poll
Roanoke Men's Lacrosse moved into fifth in the country, according to the USILA Week 10 Div. III Top-20 Poll announced Monday evening. The Maroons, now 15-2 on the season, bumped up one spot in the rankings after a convincing 15-7 win over Washington & Lee in the ODAC Semifinals last Sunday.
Stevenson (17-1) remained in the #1 spot for the second-straight week after defeating #14 Denison (10-3), 13-9 in their regular season finale. The Mustangs won their first Capital Athletic Conference Championship against defending conference champion, Salisbury, 10-6 two weekends ago. The Sea Gulls (17-1), who moved up to #2 in the rankings this week, knocked off Stevenson in the regular season, 16-10 on April 3.
Gettysburg (15-2) claimed a first-place vote, as the Bullets received 143 points to drop to third in the weekly survey. Cortland (13-2) secured the #4 slot while the Maroons round out the top-five. The Red Dragons, who started the year, 1-2, won their final 12 games of the regular season. They will host the SUNYAC Semifinals on Wednesday.
Dickinson (14-2), which knocked off the Maroons, 7-6 on March 13, fell to Haverford in the Centennial Conference semifinals, 12-11 in double-overtime. The ‘Fords (11-5), which toppled Gettysburg to win the Centennial Conference crown on Sunday, moves into the rankings at 17th.
Cabrini (12-3), moved two spots to #9 in the poll as they wrapped up the regular season with a nine-game win-streak. The Maroons topped the Cavaliers, 21-7 on March 6. They host Immaculata in the CSAC Tournament Semifinals at 4 p.m. today.
Other ODAC schools in the poll are Hampden-Sydney (13-5/19th), Washington & Lee (11-6/18th) and the Maroons next opponent, Lynchburg (13-4), which rounded out the top-10.
Roanoke has earned its fifth 15-win season over the last six years. The 15 wins are tied with the 2005, '06, and '07 teams for the second-most wins in school-history. The 21-game regular season win-streak entering this season was an ODAC-record while they are currently riding a 13-game conference win-streak dating back to last season.
Matt Quinton (Elora, Ontario, Canada, Kitchener Braves)(48g, 9a) leads the Maroons in scoring with 57 points, followed by Pat March (Glen Burnie, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)(36g, 18a) with 54 points. Trey Keeley (Lancaster, PA, Conestaga Valley High School)(45pts) leads Roanoke with 26 assists while sophomore Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ, Chatham)has 23 goals and 24 assists on the season. Freshman Richard Lachlan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary)(34g, 8a) has 42 points as Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser)has 38 points (23g, 15a) with a team-best 96 groundballs. Greg Khanzadian (Syracuse, NY, Christian Brothers)127 face-off wins is a team-high with Tuma adding 116 of his own.
Jake Dorsey (Woodbine, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)currently has 143 saves while holding a 7.80 goals against average heading into this week. He is the programs' winningest goalie with 50 for his career.
The men will take on the Hornets in the ODAC Championship on Sunday, May 9 at 2 p.m. at Kerr Stadium. It will be a battle of two of the top-10 teams in Div. III as the Maroons will host the conference championship for the second-straight year.
