Roanoke Puts Seven on First Team All-ODAC; Pilat Named ODAC Coach of the Year
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke placed seven players on the All-ODAC First Team as the conference announced the 2010 ODAC Men's Lacrosse All-Conference Teams following a vote of the league's coaches. Bill Pilat was tabbed the ODAC Coach of the Year as the Maroons were well represented in conference post-season accolades. The seven first-teamers tie the 1992 team for the most in school-history.
Pilat takes home his ninth ODAC top coaching honor and his first since winning three-straight awards from 2005-07. Pilat guided his Maroons to a 14-2 overall and 7-0 ODAC record during the regular season, and has added one more victory in the conference tournament to set up a championship clash with Lynchburg. Roanoke is currently ranked fifth in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) NCAA Division III Coaches Poll (as of May 2).
Seniors Pat March (Glen Burnie, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)and Matt Quinton (Elora, Ontario, Canada, Kitchener Braves)were named first-team in attack. March, a four-time All-ODAC player, was the 2007 ODAC Rookie of the Year and was an honorable mention USILA All-American after a stellar junior campaign. He is currently second on the team in scoring (54pts), goals (36), shots (82), shots on goal (56) and leads the team in man-up goals with nine. Quinton, a 2009 All-ODAC selection a year ago, was also earned ODAC Rookie of the Year honors in 2008. A transfer from New England College, he leads the ODAC and ranked 24th nationally in goals per game (2.82), while a team-leader in points (57), goals (48), shots (86), shots on goal (69) and has six man-up goals, second behind March.
In the midfield, junior team captain Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser)was named first-team. A second-team All-ODAC selection last season, he was named honorable mention USILA All-America honors as a sophomore. A face-off specialist, Tuma leads the ODAC in groundballs (96) while winning 116-of-178 face-offs. He has scored 23 goals and dished out 15 assists this spring.
Senior Long-Stick Midfielder Stephen Simmons (West Friendship, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)was a first-team selection for the second-straight year. A 2009 Second-Team USILA All-American, Simmons was named honorable mention All-ODAC as a sophomore in 2008. He currently has 71 groundballs, second on the team and is a team-captain this spring.
Sophomore Alex Burkhead (Winston-Salem, NC, Forsyth Country Day) and senior Sam Love (Berwyn Heights, MD, Dematha)both earned All-ODAC honors for the second-straight season. Burkhead, a second-team selection a year ago, has collected 50 groundballs while scoring three goals and adding an assist in 17 starts. He has not missed a start in two years, starting in 46 of 50 career games. Love, last year's first-team All-ODAC and Second-Team USILA All-American, has totaled 60 groundballs with two goals and three assists this season. The team captain has earned a reputation as one of the best long-stick defenders in the nation.
Jake Dorsey (Woodbine, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)is the first Maroon goalie to be named first-team all-conference since Matt Madalon following the 2006 season. The team captain has enjoyed the best season in his four-years at Roanoke, with 126 saves and a career-low 7.86 goals against average, ranked 37th in the country. His 623 career saves are fourth all-time at Roanoke, but reigns as the winningest goalie in program-history with 50 career wins.
Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ, Chatham)was named second-team all-conference after a solid sophomore season. In his first year on the all-conference team, he has totaled 23 goals and 24 assists (second on team) for 47 points, currently third on the team. For his career, he has accumulated 92 points, just eight shy of becoming the 42nd member of the 100-point club at Roanoke. Over the last three games, Keating has amassed eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points, including a three-goal, four-assist performance vs. #18 Washington & Lee in the ODAC Semifinals last Sunday.
Trey Keeley (Lancaster, PA, Conestaga Valley High School)earned all-conference honors for the first time in his career, as he was tabbed with second-team honors. The junior midfielder is currently fourth in scoring (45pts) with 19 goals and a team-high 26 assists on the year. He has totaled 76 shots, 34 on goal with four man-up goals and 23 groundballs.
Drew Manley (Severna Park, MD, St. Mary's Annapolis)was a Second-Team All-ODAC selection at the short-stick specialist position. It is the first time in his career he was voted all-conference. Manley collected 47 groundballs while scoring four times and dishing out 11 assists for 15 points on the season.
Senior Chase Phelps (Virginia Beach, VA, Cape Henry), a strong defender and a leader on defense, earned honorable mention All-ODAC honors for the first time in his career. A senior who has basically sat out for most of the last two years with a foot injury, battled his way back into shape and earned his way back on the team for his final season. He has stepped up his role to start in all 16 games played this spring with 11 groundballs to earn the school's Murphy Award, which is given to a senior student -athlete who has demonstrated extraordinary perseverance in accomplishing their academic and athletic goals at Roanoke College.
The Maroons are currently 15-2 on the season, which is the fifth time over the last six years that Roanoke has won at least 15 games or more. It ties the 2005, '06 and '07 teams for the second-most wins in school-history. They lead the country in scoring offense, scoring margin and points per game while second in both groundballs and assists per game.
The men will take on the Hornets in the ODAC Championship on Sunday, May 9 at 2 p.m. at Kerr Stadium. It will be a battle of two of the top-10 teams in Div. III as the Maroons will host the conference championship for the second-straight year.
