Eight Maroons Announced on the 2010 USILA Div. III All-American Team
Roanoke men's lacrosse had eight players represented on the 2010 USILA Div. III All-American Team announced this afternoon. The eight selections for the Maroons are the most ever to receive the prestigious accolade in the 43-year history of the program.
Stephen Simmons (West Friendship, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)and Sam Love (Berwyn Heights, MD, Dematha)earned first-team honors and will both, along with Matt Quinton be participating in the annual USILA/LaxWorld North-South Senior All-Star Game. It will be played this Friday during the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship Weekend in Baltimore, MD at Goucher College.
Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser)was selected to the second-team while Pat March (Glen Burnie, MD, Mt. St. Joseph), Jake Dorsey (Woodbine, MD, Mt. St. Joseph), Matt Quinton (Elora, Ontario, Canada, Kitchener Braves), Trey Keeley (Lancaster, PA, Conestaga Valley High School)and Alex Burkhead (Winston-Salem, NC, Forsyth Country Day)garnered honorable mention honors. It is the first time that Dorsey, Quinton, Keeley and Burkhead have been voted to the All-American team.
Simmons, a senior long-stick midfielder, was tabbed All-American for the second-straight season. A second-team selection a year ago, he also earned first-team All-ODAC for the second-straight year this spring. A three-time all-conference selection (honorable mention in 2008), Simmons was voted team captain during his final campaign and collected 85 groundballs, ranked fourth in the conference. He finished his career with 284, ranked sixth on the all-time list at Roanoke.
Love, a senior defender, earned All-American honors for the second-straight season. A team captain this spring, he garnered First-Team All-ODAC for the second-straight year. He totaled 73 groundballs in 2010 and finished with 241 for his career. He also scored two goals and had three assists.
Tuma, a junior midfielder, was voted All-American for the second-straight year. He was tabbed All-ODAC for the second-straight season, earning first-team honors in 2010. On face-offs, he won 156-of-243 attempts for a .642 win percentage. His 128 groundballs, along with his face-off win percentage and total wins led the ODAC this spring. A team captain this spring, Tuma was named Nike/Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week earlier this month and is currently eighth all-time in career groundballs with 272. The two-time groundball award winner at Roanoke, Tuma totaled 30 goals and 19 assists. He was also named ODAC Player of the Week for the first time in his career on April 5.
March, a senior attackman, earned honorable mention All-American honors for the second-straight year. A proven scorer throughout his career, March finished the year with 44 goals and 26 assists for 70 points which led the team and ranked him fourth in the ODAC. He earned First-Team All-ODAC honors for the second-straight season. The three-time all-conference selection (second-team in 2008) capped his star-studded career with 152 goals (2nd all-time), 91 assists (8th all-time), 243 points (4th all-time), 397 shots (6th all-time) and 257 shots on goal (2nd all-time).
Dorsey, a senior goalie, earned a spot on the All-American team for the first time in his career. A team captain this season, he was an All-ODAC selection for the second-straight year, earning first-team honors. Dorsey finished his 2010 campaign with 187 saves, an 8.11 goals against average and a .553 save percentage. The four-year starter ended his career with 657 saves, ranked third all-time and leaves the program as the winningest goalie with 53 career wins.
Quinton, a senior attackman, earned All-American honors for the first time in his career. The two-time All-ODAC selection finished the season ranked second in the ODAC in goals per game and led the team with 57. Quinton finished the season second on the team in scoring (69pts) while totaling 111 shots, 87 on goal for a .784 SOG percentage. On March 8, Quinton was voted both ODAC Player of the Week and Nike/Inside Lacrosse National Player of Week awards. He finished with 186 career points, ranked 13th on the all-time list at Roanoke. His 149 goals are third all-time behind March, and his 227 shots on goal are also third all-time. Quinton's 22 man-up goals tie for fourth on the career list with Andy Bonasera '03.
Keeley, a junior midfielder, earned a spot on the All-American team for the first time. He was selected All-ODAC Second-Team following a solid season for the three-year letterman. A two-year starter, Keeley totaled 23 goals and a team-best 30 assists for 53 points. He finished fourth in the ODAC in assists per game. Keeley enters the 2011 season with 98 career points.
Burkhead, a junior defender, joined three of his teammates as a first-time All-American. He was a first-team All-ODAC selection this season after making second-team in 2009. The three-year starter finished with 57 groundballs, three goals and one assist. He now has 120 career groundballs entering the 2011 season.
The Maroons finished 18-3 on the season, breaking their own school and ODAC record from a year ago. Roanoke was ranked in the top-10 in every weekly poll, a streak that has spanned over the past two seasons. They finished with a #5 ranking and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 19th time in program-history.
