Men's Lacrosse Announces Awards, 2011 Team Captains
Roanoke Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Bill Pilat has announced his team awards along with the 2011 team captains announced this week.
Tim O'Brien (Garnet Valley, PA, Garnet Valley)was voted the Paul S. Griffin Award. This award is given to the selected player who demonstrates dedication to the men's lacrosse program. The junior midfielder will conclude his athletic career at Roanoke to pursue the 3-2 engineering program at nearby Virginia Tech. He finished the year with a goal and two assists while collecting 21 groundballs. He won 25-of-46 face-off attempts for a .543 win percentage.
The Groundball Award was given to Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser). This award is given to the individual who has collected the most groundballs in a season. Tuma has earned this award for the second-straight season, collecting a conference-best 128 groundballs in 2010. He enters the 2011 season ranked eighth on the all-time list with 272. He had three games with 10 or more groundballs, including 10 in back-to-back NCAA Tournament games. His season-best was 12 against Randolph-Macon. He was recently named to the 2010 USILA All-American team along with First-Team All-ODAC honors.
Tuma will join Drew Manley (Severna Park, MD, St. Mary's Annapolis)and Alex Burkhead (Winston-Salem, NC, Forsyth Country Day)as the 2011 team captains. It will be Tuma's second-consecutive year as a team captain. Manley, a junior midfielder, had a strong 2010 campaign. He totaled 64 groundballs with four goals and 11 assists for 15 points. The short-stick specialist was a Second-Team All-ODAC selection. Burkhead, a junior defender, enjoyed his best season in a Maroon uniform, scoring his first three goals of his career with one assist for four points. He collected 57 groundballs and was named First-Team All-ODAC and honorable mention USILA All-American.
The Maroons finished 18-3 on the season, breaking their own school and ODAC record from a year ago. Roanoke was ranked in the top-10 in every weekly poll, a streak that has spanned over the past two seasons. They finished with a #5 ranking and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 19th time in program-history.
