Sam Love, Robin Yerkes named Roanoke Athletes of the Year
Men's Lacrosse standout Sam Love (Berwyn Heights, MD, Dematha)and Star Track & Field Sprinter Robin Yerkes (Arnold, MD, Broadneck)were named Roanoke's 2009-10 Male and Female Athlete of the Year announced this afternoon.
Love, a team captain, helped lead a team consisted of 14 seniors to a school-record 18 wins, the longest win-streak in ODAC history (21-straight), captured the programs' 16th ODAC Championship and advanced to Roanoke's 22nd NCAA Tournament. They finished the year as a national quarterfinalist for the 19th time in the tournament.
The 6'3 defender earned All-American honors for the second-straight season, with first-team honors this spring. He was a First-Team All-ODAC selection for a second-straight year. Love totaled 73 groundballs in 2010 and finished with 241 for his career. He also scored two goals and had three assists. He played in the annual USILA North/South All-Star Game in Baltimore, MD last weekend.
A senior from Arnold, Md., Yerkes recorded automatic national-qualifying marks in the 100m and 200m and provisional marks in the in 400m (56.16) and 4x100-meter and 4x400 meter relays. She is the 2010 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Champion in the 200 meters and 400 meters and as a member of 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays. She broke the conference meet record in the 200 meters and 400 meters, earning Athlete of the Meet honors for her efforts.
Yerkes took home three All-American awards last weekend at the NCAA Div. III T&F Championships to close her career as the most decorated track & field athlete in school-history. The back-to-back USTFCCCA South/Southeast Region Female Track Athlete of the Year finished third in the 200m, second in the 400m and eighth as the anchor on the 4x100 relay. She ran a 24.17 in the 200, which broke her own school and ODAC record. In the 400, Yerkes crossed the line in 55.14 in the prelims and 55.25 in the finals to end her illustrious career.
