SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke outscored Virginia Wesleyan, 11-4 after the first quarter and never looked back in a 24-9 ODAC-victory Saturday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons improved to 7-3 overall, 3-0 in the ODAC. The Marlins slipped to 5-5, 2-2 in conference play.
The Maroons, ranked ninth in this week's USILA Top-20 Coaches Poll, dominated the contest on paper. RC went 23-for-25 in clear attempts while holding the Marlins to 20-of-33 in that category. The men were also 3-for-5 in man-up opportunities.
Roanoke, posted season-bests of 24 goals, 73 shots (44 on goal) and won 24 face-offs while its 59 groundballs on the day were on shy of tying the season-high (60 vs. Birmingham-Southern, 3/6).
Richard Lachlan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary) led the Maroons to a 10-2 lead in the first 21-minutes of play, scoring four goals over that span. Virginia Wesleyan scored three of the next four goals of the game to close to within six, 11-5, but the day belonged to Roanoke, as the home team netted 13 of the final 17 goals of the contest.
Roanoke, which scored 20 first-half goals, was the most in that stanza since Feb. 24, 2010 against Randolph College (22-1). The Maroons, who improved to 19-3 against the Marlins, scored at least 20 points against their conference foe for the seventh time in the series.
Lachlan tied a career-high with seven goals, matching its 2010 single-game mark vs. Kenyon (3/16). Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ, Chatham) finished the day with five goals and two assists for seven points to pace Roanoke on the offensive end. He tied Colin McGahren (John Jay, N.Y, John Jay HS)'93 for 21st on the career scoring list at Roanoke (138pts).
Trey Keeley (Lancaster, PA, Conestaga Valley High School) led the Maroons with four assists and added a goal as Tim Hamernick (Darien, CT, Darien) produced two goals and three assists. Keeley moved past Joe Weeren (Winchester, Ma, Winchester HS) '03 for 23rd on the career scoring list (131pts). Mike Hayden (Vienna, VA, James Madison HS) contributed three assists while Conner DuBois (Lititz, PA, Manheim Township) netted a goal and handed out two assists.
Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser) finished the day winning 21-of-26 face-offs, collected 14 groundballs and dished out two assists. He is now 31st on the career scoring list (114pts), while his 370 career groundballs are 14 shy of moving into third on the all-time list.
Defensively, Drew Manley (Severna Park, MD, St. Mary's Annapolis) led the Maroons with three groundballs and four caused turnovers. Troy Grogan (Palgrave, Ontario, Culver Academies) had five groundballs and three caused turnovers followed by Michael Lintner (Houston, TX, Episcopal), who collected five groundballs and added two caused turnovers.
Charles Pease (Landisville, PA, Hempfield) (3-2) earned the win in goal for Roanoke with 10 saves. Mike Hardon (Devon, PA, The Gunnery), David Long (Westport, CT, Fairfield Prep) and Kennan Miller (Esmont, VA, Monticello) combined for 6 saves in relief.
Andrew Adamson and Adam Nycz scored two goals each for the VWC. Kevin Topper added a goal and an assist. Tyler Keech finished with 20 saves and six groundballs in goal for the Marlins.
