Three Maroons earn ODAC Player of the Week Honors
Men's Lacrosse standout Richard Lachlan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary), softball slugger Lisa Scruggs (Madison Heights, VA, Holy Cross) and track runner Carmen Graves (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg) each earned ODAC Player of the Week honors announced this afternoon. For Scruggs and Graves, it marks the second time this season they have garnered the weekly honor. For Lachlan, it's the first time in his career that he has gained conference recognition.
Lachlan, a sophomore from British Columbia, Canada, helped the Maroons to a 24-9 ODAC win over Virginia Wesleyan last week. He tied a career-high seven goals in the victory, including four in the first quarter as Roanoke mounted an early lead. Lachlan is currently tied for the conference lead with 25 goals and a 2.5 goals per game average. He is seventh in the ODAC at 3.10 points per game.
Roanoke, which moved up to eighth in this week's USILA Top-20 Coaches Poll, is currently 7-3 overall and remained undefeated in the conference standings with a 3-0 mark. The Maroons will take on ODAC-rival Washington and Lee on Wednesday, April 6 at 7 p.m. in the confines of Kerr Stadium.
Graves, a sophomore from Christiansburg, Va., picks up her second outdoor weekly award of the season. Graves placed second overall and first among NCAA Division III runners in the 800-meter run at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational. She posted a time of 2:16.76, just .19 second slower than her ODAC-best seasonal time in the event.
The track & field teams will compete in the Lynchburg Classic on Saturday, April 9.
Scruggs, a senior from Lynchburg, Va., picks up her second weekly award of the season. She helped lead RC to a 4-0 record against two conference opponents last week, hitting 6-of-13 with three home runs, two doubles, six runs and six RBI. Scruggs crashed two solo home runs to help lead Roanoke to a 6-4 come-from-behind victory in game one against Lynchburg. She added a double and a home run with three RBI to lead the Maroons to a 7-0 victory over Randolph in game one.
Roanoke, which is currently 21-5 this spring, improved to 6-2 which ties Eastern Mennonite for first in the ODAC standings. The women will have a busy week with home doubleheaders against Emory & Henry (4/6), Virginia Wesleyan (4/9) and Randolph-Macon (4/10).
