Men's Lacrosse Caps Weekend with Victories over Randolph and #17 Cabrini
Roanoke earned victories over both Randolph (23-7) and #17 Cabrini, 14-13 over the weekend. The Maroons, ranked eighth in the country, record now stands at 10-3 overall, 5-0 in ODAC play.
With the two wins over the weekend, the men's lacrosse program upped its winning-streak to five and clinched its third-straight season with at least 10 wins. It also marks the eighth time in nine years and the 15th time in the history of the storied program to reach the single-season win milestone.
Joey Coretti's five first-half goals led Roanoke to a convincing, 23-7 win over the WildCats on Saturday afternoon. The win kept the Maroons undefeated and atop the ODAC standings. Jeff Keating netted two goals and dished out three assists in the conference-victory.
The Maroons stormed out to a commanding 12-0 lead and never trailed in the conference victory against Randolph. The Wildcats, however, scored six of the first nine goals of the second-half to close to 15-6 with nine minutes left.
But Roanoke closed the contest scoring eight of the last nine goals to run away with their ninth win of the season. The Maroons out-shot the WildCats, 65-32, and won the groundball battle, 56-43. They were successful in 25-of-26 clear attempts.
Ty Roselli had three goals and two assists to pace Roanoke. Dominic Gurnsey scored three times and Zack Martin added a pair of goals as well. The Maroons had 13 different goal scorers on the afternoon, but the contest was only the second of the year they didn't win the face-off battle.
Junior keeper Kevin McCracken was solid in net, making 23 saves on the afternoon. John Grundy won 10 face-offs and picked up eight ground balls, and Story chalked up a team-best eight ground balls while winning seven-of-eight face-offs. Sophomore Ryan Blackwell had an assist, two pickups and a caused turnover.

Roanoke snapped #17 Cabrini's five-game win-streak in a one-goal victory on the road in Pennsylvania Sunday afternoon at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
A insurance goal by Richard Lachlan proved invaluable as RC took a 14-12 lead with 2:28 remaining. A Cabrini goal cut the Maroon lead in half with 18-seconds left and won the ensuing face-off to have one more shot. The Cavaliers' Paul Skulski fired a shot with one second remaining, but Roanoke goalie Charles Pease came up the 12th and biggest save of his young career to preserve the non-conference triumph.
The Maroons out-shot Cabrini, 60-43, including a 36-25 edge in shots on goal, to earn a big non-conference road win against a USILA Top-20 opponent. The men won the groundball war, 48-34, won 19-of-29 face-offs and were successful in 20-of-27 clear attempts.
Lachlan led Roanoke with four goals and an assist, followed by Trey Keeley and Mike Hayden with three goals on the day. Keating finished with a goal and four assists to pace to potent Maroon offense. He moved into 20th on the all-time scoring list at Roanoke (154pts).
Justin Tuma added two goals, two assists, seven groundballs and won 13-of-20 face-offs for the afternoon. After this weekend, the senior captain moved into third on the career groundballs list at Roanoke (393). Drew Manley led RC with eight groundballs and had two assists.
Bobby Thorp led Cabrini with four goals and one assist as Dan Terenick added three goals and a helper in the loss. Steve Heaps collected seven groundballs while Joe Strain won 8-of-11 face-offs for the Cavaliers.
The men will return to action this Saturday, April 16 as they will host Hampden-Sydney in the home finale during Roanoke College's “Alumni Weekend.” Game time is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
